£5 charge for lost id card

hi would welcome any opinions on the following issue

got transfered over to a new company 12 months ago. The new company issued photo id cards. Ive just managed to lose it and they are saying its £5 for a replacement

is this a fair cost for the replacement of a photo id card with a chip?

im still on my contract from my original employer and this obviously doesnt mention cost of such replacements

when i signed to acknowledge receipt of id card - not sure if cost of replacement was mentioned

I'd say it's fair to be honest, if you lost your bank card more than once in a year they'd probably charge you a tenner - chalk it up to experience & don't lose it again.

Printing those cards is expensive - surprisingly expensive! I know because I'm just looking into doing a print run of 200, and am still looking at around £2/card without a chip single sided. This is because they are thermal transfer printed to make them durable and waterproof. And they have to prepare the artwork too, so it takes a good 30 mins.

If the card also has a chip and possibly wireless mifare storage etc for proximity access systems etc it requires another stage for programming and the access systems updating etc...

It probably costs them over a fiver to be honest once you factor it all in
  • £5 sounds quite reasonable for a replacement card to me...I've had this type of card at three different employers and all of them had a higher charge for replacement (two charged £10 and one £15).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

It's cheap compared to what we have to pay, replacements are £10. Me and my colleagues produce badges for the hospital I work for and you would be surprised by the cost of the individual items and the amount of time that they take to input into the computer system.

Our id badges consist of a reader card for swipe access, a photo id card for the picture and job title/department which is then stuck onto the reader card, a badge holder and clip.

We have doctors changeover a couple of times a year and I'm always amazed at the amount of junior doctors who come in a couple of days after they have received their badge saying they have lost them!!

PAC Proximity cards cost about £3, the printing costs about £1 in CYM ribbon (and the print head only has a very limited life) if they have purchased a card printer themselves.

Then theres the cost of registering the new card chip details with the access control software and reassigning any personal rights or special door modes you might have.

    I'd say £5 is fair.
  • My old firm charged £20 if you lost your ID for the building.. £5 is cheap!

My old university charged £10. Touch chip and photo so £5 seems cheap.

While the cost probably matches the production, charges like these are there to enforce the importance of these little secure cards and encourage holders not to lose them!
