I spend about £40 a week to feed 2 of us. We don't scrimp as we like good food but we're pretty much veggie and cook everything from scratch so the money goes a long way. I get some fruit from the market, the odd tin from B&M and everything else from Waitrose.

    That's pretty good going.

We are meat eaters but I cook from scratch, shop in Aldi with top-ups at Sainsbury's and buy a few bargains wherever I see them and I'm lucky to come in at £50.

Well done:T any tips/recipe ideas welcome.

We like pasta sauces and in the past bought Dolmio/Ragu but these jars can be £1.50+ (unless on offer). I've tried making my own but it never tastes quite the same. Does anyone have a 'tasty' tomato based sauce that we can use with mince/meatballs/pasta that doesn't need a milion ingredients.

    Thanks

    Lou:)
  • hi everyone
ive just started to keep a very tight reign on all of my spending and i just wondered what you would think a 3 adult household should spend on food shopping a week? or whats the least we could spend etc?
we have been lidl shoppers for over a year now and are now scared to go into any other supermarket as the prices seem so high, we do however sometimes have to go to sainsburys to get things that you cant get in lidls.
i think we spend about £300 a month on food, do you think this is high for 3 adults or should i carry on with what im doing?
also any cheap meal ideas would be fab! we are trialing a wheat free diet at the moment so please bare that in mind with your ideas.
    many thanks

firstly find you nearest market this will cut you fresh food shopping by about half. then think of the thing you use all the time and take a trip to a short date wholesaler (google ones in your area), spices only buy from your local ethnic shop you will get at least 1oo% more for the same price as a supermarket, then try the online sites like approved foods or long date stuff. also costco is great for meat if you are happy to buy in bulk and split :-)

We buy a years supply of a product if perishable and up to five years if non perishable when we find good offers. Take advantage of Asda Price Guarantee and Tesco Price Promise glitches and buy in bulk.

Last month we spent £116 on groceries and most of that was bread, milk and glitches.

    I am sure the more experienced understand this, but for the newbies;
Check out mysupermarket.com. Look at the supersavvy deals this will tell you often the real deals in supermarkets amongst the 100s of special offers. I shop at Asda most of the time now... so look at the special offers on mysupermarket for tesco, buy them in Asda at the higher price. Asda will then give you the difference plus 10%.

Do it the opposite way if you dont have a asda near you? (Tescos dont give you the 10% though).

As an example this week I am stocking up for a years supply of Robinsons squash ensuring I get the 10p petrol vouchers and getting £10 TPP... see the thread on Grabbit, and working towards my 5 year objective for toilet rolls, already have a load from the similar summer petrol promotion.

With the 10p petrol vouchers and the £10 price promise vouchers both work out free or nearly free depending on the size of your petrol tank.
