Cleaning a barbeque grill

Hi All

We have a gorgeous gas barbeque, with really heavy grill plates. We got the barbie out yesterday to clean, ready for today, and DH bought the plates in to clean. I remembered the thread about soaking oven racks in the bath, so suggested it for the BBQ bits.

I dissolved a load of bio washing powder in the the bath, lined the bottom with tea towels, and piled the grill plates etc in. I put in enough water to cover them well, and left them overnight.

This morning, the carp just wiped off with the soaking wet tea towels.

Brilliant! If I'd known this worked, I would have done it before the grill things became this bad!

Thank you to whoever started the original tghread about bathing oven racks.

Done it for years myself, my Gran used to do it, only downside is cleaning the bath afterwards :o

Oven cleaner of course usually works on BBQ grills but the chemicals in it makes me choke even if I do it outside.
One day I might be more organised...........

I do the same, but I use soda crystals instead (cheaper :shhh: ) :D

  • It's probably terribly unhygienic, and I certainly don't recommend you do it, but I've left trays to soak in a tub of water outside for a few days before bringing them in and scrubbing and rinsing. They come up like new, without any chemical residues to get into the food. I figure any bacteria on the griddle are going to be killed by the heat of the barbecue. I've never had any problem with the barbecue food after doing this.

I have bought a big blue tray from Lakeland which is meant for cleaning the oven racks. It is brilliant as it is large enough to take the oven racks and I can place it on the side of the sink so it is easy to empty. I have also used it for planting seedlings and for when the children want to do messy crafts like glitter :D . Here is the link http://www.lakeland.co.uk/product.aspx/!20228

I saw that some years ago... it's quite big...where do you store it the rest of the time?

Just off the top of my head ... you could put it on the patio and use it as a plant pot 'saucer'.

    Under a bed?

    On top of a wardrobe?

    Just some thoughts :o

    Hi All

Hope you're all having a lovely day as we are with the sun shining gloriously! :D So gloriously in fact that DH decided to invite the ILs over for a bbq tonight. This is our first one of the year and we have uncovered it to discover the plates have got a bit of rust on them!!!

We've only used this one a couple of times - I'm so cross!! Anyhoo, I need to get these cleaned for tonight. Any ideas anyone?

(fingers crossed you're not all out in the garden sunning yourselves :))

    Hi daysieblue,

This thread should help: Soaking in the bath works for BBQs too!

I'll merge your thread with that one later to keep all the suggestions together. Enjoy your barbeque tonight...it's non stop rain here today!

I would just use a little bit of elbow grease and one of the Brillo or similar stainless steel round scourers.

It shouldn't take too long and we find it does wonders with grill pan grid etc etc.

Very warm and balmy here in South-East Scotland but clouds indicate something brewing. Hope you have a lovely evening

    Best wishes

Wire brush or wool should get it off, we found our bbq was broken one year went to the £1 shop and bought some disposable ones and put them on it, worked a treat.

That oven rack dish thing, wonder if a cat litter tray would work the same, can get them in £ shops so would be cheaper. I'll stick with using the bath for now, £9.99 seems a lot and we don't have a lakeland up here.
