Taking your vans home with you!

My dad was complaining a few months ago about the taxable equivalent his company van was going to cost him in the 2007/08 tax year. Up from paying 22% tax on £500 (the equivalent in wages that use of the van is worth) to 22% on £3,000.

This meant paying £550 more this year than last for being able to drive between home and work with his van!

When I looked into it, provided that he used it solely for this purpose, and did not use it privately and could agree or prove this, there was in fact no tax charge at all, and his employer's accountant had been unaware of changes to legislation, and so carried on charging tax  .

So armed with the proof http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/vans/van-facts.htm my dad got tax back from the current tax year, and won't be paying anything for using his van this year :j .

If you're in a similar position, I would urge you to inform your employer and don't pay the tax!

All the best
