Tesco brown onions

I was just in Tesco and you could get 3 onions in a net bag for £1 or a large 5kg net sack full of huge brown onions for £1.49. I know it sounds daft, but when I see something that cheap i'm immediately suspicious - is the big sack going to be full of very old or poor quality onions? They were marked as UK grown so not a cheap import (if they still exist!). Has any bought these before?

I'm going in a bit so I'll have a look at them, I'm sure they'll be fine.

You can buy a big bag and get them all chopped and frozen when you get home to save them going to waste - if you can bear the tears ofcourse

I never ever buy the 3 in a net as it's much cheaper to buy 3 loose ones of the same size :)

Onions are always cheaper at Asian supermarkets though I don't know why.

  • I think it's more the other way, £1 for 3 onions is overpriced!

I usually buy the 1kg bag for around £1. I don't have enough room in my storecupboard/freezer for any more than that, otherwise I wouldn't have any issue buying the 5kg bag. They're usually smaller than the ones in the expensive net, but otherwise fine. :)

Your three is a net are uni-formally sized and over priced

What you get in the net at how onions are the world over - different sizes - usually quiet small ( as my crop has been this wet summer) and there is nothing wrong with them at all

Store them cool and dark and not touching and they will last for weeks. Ir if not slice or dice them and freeze them

Last week I wanted one pepper. Single price - 80p. Bag of 5 assorted peppers - 79p - guess what I bought :)

    Sounds like a bargain!
I usually get Lidl onions. 5kg are £1.39 when reduced from the usual price of £1.99.
I keep the sack in a cool place and they last ages. I have enough to give to my friends and family too.
  • Both prices seem a bit steep to me. I currently pay £1.99 for a 20kg net sack of UK grown onions either from a local market or a local garage shop mind you I don't shop in Tesco & I certainly couldn't afford their price for a 20kg sack.

There should be no difference in quality whether buying a single onion or a sack full as long as they are stored somewhere cool & dark & are not bruised then they should keep for months.

LOL - do click on the link.

I have a device or three which I use to chop or slice onions to make it quicker with less tears. JML nicer dicer is fast for chopping.

Some onions I fry down first in a bit of oil and freeze. Then I can make a soup or stew or sauce much more quickly.

I don't think anyone could afford Tesco's 20kg sack of onions!

I've always known the 3 onions for a pound is a complete rip off. I tend to buy loose ones, as I don't use them that often. Costs me on average 18p per onion, so I could buy 5 for £1 with some change left over. Although not as cheap as a big sack, it's better value if you don't use onions often or don't have enough freezer space to store them!
