I've bought my Mum one for Christmas, I have to say though that if he asked for an Ipad, I think he'd be sorely disappointed with it. Hope this helps.
  • he actually asked for either an i-pad or an i-pod touch, the i pod is more affordable but the playbook around the same price.

I personally would opt for the ipod touch over the playbook - for a younger person x
  • what about a kindle fire? I'm getting one for xmas. but then again i'm a 36 year old woman not a teenage boy!

my husband has the playbook and loves it. he also has an ipod touch but prefers the bigger screen on the playbook.
could you give him the money you are willing to spend and then he can decide if he wants to save the rest over time to get the ipad or go buy the ipod touch or playbook straight away!?

I definitely agree with posters above who say that of he has asked for an iPad, do NOT get him a Playbook, or a Nexus or a Kindle. You could end up having a very disappointed son, and an expensive unappreciated present.

There are some people who specifically want an Apple tablet, and there are other people who say 'iPad' when they mean any tablet, because they have been conditioned by Apple's image and ads. (I was once happily reading my Kindle on train when the man opposite me nudged his wife and said 'that's one of those iPads that I want'. - I really hope he didn't waste £400 on something he couldn't identify but that's the power of Apple!) You'll know if your son wants a new toy or is a image-conscious Apple-loyalist.

I agree with the previous poster - I would give him money to the value of a Playbook or Kindle Fire, and be totally honest and explain that you can't afford an iPad, but you have seen plenty of possible alternatives and thought it would be best if he made his own choice - that way he is free to buy one of the cheaper non-Apple tablets, or he can save up the rest for the iPad.

As I said, only you will know what will work best for your son, though.
  • thanks for your help. hes only 11 and wants an ipad/ipod because most of his friends have an i-pad :-O!! i think il go with the ipod as it seems more age appropriate. if it was his birthday i'd give him money but as its xmas id like to give him the present :-)
