Unreasonable length of time?

i bought my son some headphones on line for his music degree work (cost almost £200) i purchased them in august. Last week they snapped at the headband, the company are saying that he has to return them so that the manufacturer can examine them, i blieve its the companies responsibility to address my complaint and refund or replace as they have not lasted for a reasonable length of time
they are saying it will take up to 28 days for them to decide on a refund/replacement and he needs them for his practical work
what can i do??
