Home insurance when bankrupt and have criminal record

Hello

this is my first post, I hope someone can help with my question. My sibling and partner have moved back in with my parents because they are about to go bankrupt. Understandably I am very worried about how this will affect my mum and dads home insurance, amongst many, many other things! After reading previous posts I am aware of several companies are likely to offer home insurance to someone who has a bankrupt living with them, but to make matters worse my sisters partner has a criminal record. My mum and dad have no idea what to do, this is a situation that they have not had to deal with before and they are not in the best of health. I have offered to help them sort out some home insurance however am struggling to know where to start! They are currently with Saga and are very happy with their service. I believe the partners criminal record is for ABH - and I don't think it's spent. I think there's a year or two to go. I am only concerned about my parents belongings and home being insured, if my sister cannot cover her possessions that is secondary. They own their house outright, have excellent credit and have never been in any trouble with the police - though I doubt that will help them get home insurance in this situation.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

All insurance companies have their own criteria to which they work to.

In most cases, if a member of the household has a criminal record which isn't classed as spent under the Rehabilitation Of Offenders Act, then obtaining insurance will be difficult but perhaps not impossible.

Completing online applications will probably decline to quote immediately (read their assumptions and/or terms and conditions for a overview of their criteria).

The best suggestion I can think of is to go into one of the high street banks (perhaps where they have a bank account) and ask the bank to quote. They may then get a decision to refer rather than automatic decline and if so, may have the opportunity of speaking to the underwriter to give as much information as possible to manually review the application.

If any insurer declines to offer cover, and for whatever reason, you will normally be required to provide these details also as part of the assumptions or application questions.

Unfortunately it's not a straight forward answer but I do hope someone is found to cover. Good luck!
  • Oh crikey, what a pickle.

The best suggestion I have is go to a local high street broker where you live and explain the situation. They can usually get the best prices where specialist cover like your scenario applies.

Hopefully for your parents this won't be a long stay for the sake of their health and they can be back to normal before long.
