  • I’m another singleton and also doing the Grocery Challenge, first time in ages, on a budget of £50, but I would say to drop to that initially may be difficult unless you have built up a good supply in your freezer and store cupboards.

My freezer has become my best pal although it is only half the size of a standard fridge with careful packing I can store quite a lot. When on offer I buy the large packs of meat and because I don’t want to cook & freeze 6-8 portions of the same meal I tend to cling and bag meats in smaller portions to freeze and cook however much I want when I have time. Freezing bacon I separate the rashers with greaseproof paper so that I can take out as many rashers as I need at any particular time.

In my freezer I’ve currently got enough portions of soup, main meals and veg for sides to keep me going for 2 – 3 weeks. It does take a bit of organising, forward planning and lists unfortunately, but it is well worth it and does get easier to do.

I’ve tried many different spread-sheet type planners/inventory but find the best way for me is basically three columns - one for the weekly menu, one for remaining freezer stocks, one for remaining fridge/store-cupboard supplies this keeps me up to speed with what needs to be used or replaced.
If you have one near you, get to a Farm Foods and buy some Nicky toilet roll, the kitchen roll is good too. /QUOTE]

I’m a convert and now prefer them to the big brands that I used to buy, I get mine at Home Bargains.

Also check out the baby supplies aisle in the supermarket – I’ve used the own brand ranges of baby bath instead of shower gel and baby wipes are often on offer – great for removing mascara and make-up.

    Good Luck :)
