Top Soil

We need approx 15 tons of top soil for a new lawn. Does anyone have any idea how we can avoid paying retail prices? We are in Lincolnshire.
The figures weve been quoted are around £80 so far and thats just way out of our budget! Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.

15 tons for £80? I just paid £100 for 3 tons, I'd have been happy paying less than a fiver a ton(and amazed tbh)!

We used to have a sugar plant factory near us (since closed down) where you could go and pick it up for free, as much as you like, included manure, it was really good stuff!

I agree with Woby. It sounds like a good price. You could always try a Farm (especially if it already sells eggs and stuff) One local to us sells topsoil.

ah right that sounds marginally better so to speak

have you checked your local yellow pages for topsoil suppliers, as the majority of the cost is in the delivey it's hard to beat local people normally. Ours was from an aggregate delivery company, mostly did gravel or waste removal but they also did topsoil for £39/ton bag with free delivery if it was over 2 bags

i.e. people like these(random pick from yell.com) the topsoil bit is hidden away

according to the missus she has heard that some people let you drive up and fill your trailer for free. i dont know where these guys are though so it might be just keeping your eyes open and asking around.

Have you thought about posting a 'wanted' request on your local freecycle? Just recently there have been quite a few offers of topsoil on our local group and that's where we hope to get rid of ours when we (eventually) remodel the front garden later in the summer. (I would offer you ours but we're all the way down in Cornwall, so petrol/time costs wouldn't make it worth your while) You might not get the 15 tons you want but you could end up reducing your final bill

    Hope that helps

the problem with 'local' top soil is it's often not screened like some suppliers so it all depends what 'quality' you want. If you after depth then it's probably worthwhile as you can do the lower layers with unscreened soil, for the top player it's better to get it screened first(whether you do it yourself is another thing) to remove stones and debris etc. You also then have to factor in the cost and effort of loading and unloading up to 15 tons at either end of the journey and weigh up the 'cost'
