Default on my credit ref thanks to O2

Sorry for new thread but couldn't find anything close to my whinge of the day!
In 2002 I had a mobile phone with Genie, they were fine, then they were taken over (or something) by O2 online who were not so good. I decided to go elsewhere so tried to contact them, over a six week period I wrote to them several times, called them numerous times at 50p a minute but never got to talk to anyone.
The last letter I sent to them was in September 2002 when I asked them to close my account, I warned them I would cancel the direct debit in 14 days and if I owed them money after that they should send me a letter. I didn't hear anything.
In December 2006, a default notice for O2 appeared in my credit file, this was for £29.00, I eventually managed to get them to find this debt and paid it. 3 months on, the default notice is still on my credit file and O2 are refusing to take it off because they say it is not their fault. They never wrote to me in 2002, apparently they sent me an email but I only found out about that this week.
Sorry about the whinge! I am a debt free wannabe and stupid things like this don't help! I am going to write to them again and see if I can get this sorted, has anyone else had a similar problem? Seems to me they found some bad debts when they did year end in 2006, I honestly never heard a thing from them until I wrote to them this year.
Light bulb moment - July 2005
Debts at light bulb moment - £24,500
Debts today £8700
Debt free in 2008 if I give up smoking - 2010 if I don't!!
I think you are all wonderful :A

This doesn't help your current situation, but it really is a bad idea cancelling DDs just "for the sake of it" and certainly before your final settlement has been made on any supplier's arrangement.
Given that any supplier has to give you notice before collecting amounts by DD, you really should leave the DD running for a sensible period of time.
IMHO cancelling DDs does no good in almost any circumstance. There is NO risk of fraud due to an obsolete DD being used.0 -
The reason I cancelled the DD way back in 2002 was because I had spent 6 weeks trying to make contact with O2, it was an online account and I was frozen out of the webpages, they wouldn't answer the phone and they were in the process of taking over 'genie's' business.
I went into the local O2 shop as well but they couldn't help because it was an online account, learned my lesson with those now.
I have written to 02 this weekend, enclosing a copy of the letter I sent them in September 2002 (anal me keeping letters for so long), I have asked them to remove the default so hopefully they will, if they don't I will ask ofcom for help.
