Thank you Mouse and Pippa. I figure that, armed with the truth and full implications, they now have the choice to still ask me to come in (and in their shoes, I probably wouldn't), but are not forced to do so out of niceness.

They may think instead that you have something to hide, that the causes of the BR were not as honourable as they might have been or that you didn't really want the job though. Whereas had you been honest and open or asked for their feedback first you'd have got an honest open answer and it might not have been what you obviously were expecting.
