Not sure what to do

or if I can do anything about this so hopefully someone on here can advise me.

Here goes

I work for the NHS full time and have done for the past 12 years, and always worked nights, same nights each week Thursday to Sunday for 3 weeks 3rd week is 3 night week so Sunday night off, but since January we have had a new manager who pretty much refuses to let me have the Sunday off, (she gives me Thursday) and now when I went to work on Thursday she's left me a note to say she 'needs' me to do 2 weeks on days for 'training and updates' starting the w/c 3rd December, I've requested this week as annual leave in order to go to a wedding on the Saturday so to me it looks like shes not granting me the annual leave and I know there won't be any training or updates. Would I be right to ask to do the 'training and updates' on days I don't work and go in for training sessions at a time convienient for me or should I just get it over with.

BTW I had to do 3 weeks on days last year for the same reasons and no training happened and I am not the only one who works 'just' nights and they have never been put on days. I was also told I wouldn't loose my night allowance but I did resulting in my wages being £400.00 less

my advice would be talk to her and try and reach a compromise that suits you both - i.e you get time off to go to your wedding but you agree to come in for the training and updates - you can't really "know" that there won't be any training until it the days have been and gone but you can't really refuse to work as requested because I think she has given you reasonable notice - hope that is helpful
The mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work unless it’s open.:o

A winner listens, a loser just waits until it is their turn to talk:)
  • I'm sorry, but I can't make much sense of most of your post. Why does the fact you've been told to work days on w/c 3rd December imply that you can't have this coming week off? Ah, you mean you think you can't have the week of 3rd December off, maybe?

OK, I don't think you can refuse to work days when asked, for starters, whether or not your training and updates happens. However, leaving you a note to say you are needed to do this isn't a very good response to your request for leave, which I assume you submitted prior to this note. Can you send her a polite note asking if she received your request for leave, which unfortunately clashes with this training, and asking if the training can be rescheduled?

When does your leave year end? Because you have a stronger case for arguing taking this leave as requested if you HAVE to take it by the end of December (fingers crossed).

You state that you are the only one who works 'just' nights. Are you happy with this arrangement? If not, have you told management that you are unhappy with the situation?

Your last sentence is the most worrying, in a way. What have you done to bring your loss of this payment, which I assume is a contractual right, to management attention?
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

Jobbingmusician you've misread I said I'm not the only one who works 'just' nights but I am the only one who has to do days.

And yes I have questioned the loss of earnings and the then Ward Manager even showed me an email that went to wages confirming that no loss would be incurred and I do have a copy of said email, and was told it would be sorted but never has despite me asking repeatedly.

I don't actually mind doing the day shifts as I quiet enjoyed the change it just feels like I'm being singled out IYKWIM

Put this in writing to nurse manager and payroll manager copying in trade union requesting they resolve the issue as a matter of urgency.

If you feel you are being singled out have a chat with union rep. What is the training - if it already organised your manager should be in a position to provide you with training details.

That's just it there wont actually be any training or updates because its all done on a yearly basis as Study Days which are always on days off and I do feel that I am being singled out

Looks like you may have to raise a grievance on the issue of the lost wages; and speak to your union/be prepared to raise a grievance about being singled out and made to attend imaginary training sessions just to stop you from having the leave that you have requested.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
