In that case if you get an interview it might be worth asking if they do pay London living wage, perhaps the department advertising this job haven't got the message yet.

It is advertised by the HR team in Selfridges. You can't ask for more as that is the advertised salary. I doubt I will hear back anyway.

There are loads of jobs I have applied for in London for £6.19 a hour. All in the west end or central areas.

There is a thing on the news now asking large co's to pay £1 over the NMW to make their staff have a living wage and take them out of poverty.
  • Its all a fallacy this NMW/Living wage. If it goes up so does the cost of products and then £8.55 becomes below the 'liveable' wage.

    That is capitalism for you.

If the retails had kept their manufacturing in the UK instead of giving it out to other countries in the far east they would be far better off now instead of having to shipping costs and at the mercy of the fluctuation of currency exchange rates.

I have always been led to believe that salary is always negotiable (within reason obviously) except within certain sectors (NHS and LA being main ones)

Even in Local Authorities salary can be negotiable within the pay bands (ie most jobs are advertised with a starting salary at the bottom of the band for the post, but if you're very good you can negotiate a higher starting wage).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Not really because costs would be alot higher than they are now anyway

Add shipping costs in its still cheaper to import.

I expect not may companies will agree to the rise for their staff. I feel it should be the big PLC companies that should pay their staff a living wage for London.

How do you know? Have you been offered a job there and tried to negotiate a higher salary?
