American recipe - 'stick of butter'

Hi all,

I've got an American recipe for chocolate chip walnut cookies I fancy trying. It calls for 2 'sticks' of butter - does anyone know how much this is?

Thanks.

A stick of butter is half a lb. A lb is 454g, so 2 sticks is pretty much a 500g pack.

  • Anyone know how much a tablespoon of butter is? I come across it in American recipes sometimes. I treat is as an ounce but no idea if that's right.
  • Hello, I've just googled both questions and an American stick of butter weighs 4oz. The same site said 1oz of butter is the equivalent of 2 American tablespoons, so 1 tablespoon is 1/2 oz butter. Hope that helps, Cheers Lyn.
  • Thank you!

    a stick is 1/4lb not a half lb (125g). Tablespoon 1/2 oz - approx 14g
