what type of wool do you use for gloves ?

Options
My lovely MIL has agreed to knit some gloves for me for a Xmas present this year - she'll provide the time if I provide the yarn.

I have absolutely no idea about all things woolly, so I'm hoping that one of you lovelies can advise me whether the following would be suitable for knitting to protect my digits this winter:

Sirdar firefly Purple rain 181:

  • Firefly is a a fashion yarn. This would not be suitable for gloves as the texture is too open and it will have holes in it, it will also be very cold.

You will need a double knitting wool rich yarn. (The Firefly is suitable for a scarf)

  • Agree with that. Any Double knitting yarn with some wool content preferable.

Depends on the pattern in terms of what weight you need - I' go for a 4ply weight and natural fibres tend to be warmer - I'd go for cashmere if money was no object but alpaca is very 'lofty' so traps air to keep you warm

oh boo! I really loved that wool :( Still, thanks to you guys, I've avoided an expensive mistake.....

If anyone knows of a similar style & colour (shades of purple, maybe a bit of black with a slight sparkle to it), I'd be very grateful if they could post a link pls :)

doesn't say anything about DK, but what about this:

  • A double knit sock yarn such as Regia would be great for gloves, it'll knit up quick, be warm and washable, and durable. I use it for a lot of double knitting patterns.

I've not tried any yarn like that Dune yarn but I don't know if it wold be easy to knit gloves with...mittens maybe, but gloves with fingers could be tricky. If you have a local yarn shop, you could go in and see if they have it so you can touch it and decide whether or not it might be knittable, or buy one ball and do a swatch to see if you like how it knits up.

not as dark as I would have liked, but how about this one - DK merino & alpaca mix - would that work for gloves?

If so, how many balls of wool would be needed for a small/medium size do you think? Really appreciate all this help!

ETA: ahhhhhh, not sure its DK, must've mis-read :(

Have you tried Ravelry for patterns?

You probably need about 100g of wool for a pair of gloves-I've just knitted some mittens which took just under 100g of aran weight wool and a pair of fingerless mitts with a 25g ball of 4 ply type wool which was free with a knitting magazine. If you have a local yarn shop they should be able to advise you.
