Barclaycard - How Stupid!

Morning all,
Sorry to have a little moan on the weekend.
Doing a DMP privately, all creditors are ok including some rotters like MBNA.
However, Barclaycard wrote to me saying that they will start to reapply interest charges as of the 25th April. I currently owe £3300 approx. and pay £57 to them which was agreed when I started my DMP, originally with Payplan.
I rang them to discuss and basically the outcome was that I will have to pay interest which is £54appox, so I will pay off £3 per month. If I go back to Payplan they will freeze the interest. I then rang later on to have a right go and the outcome of this was if I agree to pay £33 per month (1%) then they will freeze all interest. So I said well why cant you freeze the interest and accept £57 from me as you have been doing as it will clear the debt off quicker.
We cant accept £57 as its too high and suggests you can meet the normal repayments etc etc.
How stupid is this. I am now paying £33 a month and I have an extra £24 to pay to other creditors. If I pay anymore than £33 to them then I will have to go onto normal repayments. Find it so stupid. Or is it me being stupid and not understanding??

That has to be one of the funniest things I've read today! You'd have thought they'd have snapped up your offer of £57 a month but at least with £33 you will clear the debt faster with no interest plus that extra £24 can be chucked at your other debts!0

sounds pretty normal for barclaycard - few days ago one of their reps actually challenged me to take them to the small claims court.
Personally, i would take them up on their offer of stupidity, at least you'll have £24 to throw at someone else (or maybe give yourself an emergency fund)No Longer works for MBNA as of August 2010 - redundancy money will be nice though.

Thanks. I of course took them up on the offer. Just such a stupid situation. I should have added they will review the situation in 6 months. By then I will owe £3102 so they said if I can still not afford to make interest payments they will take 1% which will be less still. Just a laughable situation.Total Debt now £22,525.07 Start Debt £32,732.36

The problem, Hobsch, is that you are not talking to a real human being. You are talking to someone who is sitting in front of a computer screen, asking you SET questions and fitting the answers that you give into pre-determined boxes.
The computer will come up with the 'solution' that it's software is programmed to select. The loyal call-centre employee has been 'brainwashed' to accept, without question, what this 'miracle of modern technology' throws out.
There is absolutely nothing to be gained in trying to apply reason or logic with these people - even if they pass you to a 'supervisor', all you are, in effect, getting is someone with a bigger computer.

If the interest rate is frozen, what is the problem? Just put the extra in a savings account, and forget about it until you have around 50% of the debt and can offer a decent F&FS.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

similar thing happened to me with hsbc. for four months i will need to make payments of about £30, during which time they can freeze interest. after that, my i&e will change so i will be able to double that payment. however, this will make my payments too high for interest to be frozen any longer. so basically i can continue to pay £30 for duration of DMP (finding some way to justify it) and have all interest frozen - or make payment of £58 (£45 of which will go on interest each month) meaning i am only paying £13 towards my substancial debt!! how ridiculous...I'm moving on up now,

No, you're not being stupid, Hobsch - they're just so caught up in their own bureaucracy, with everything having to be done in a particular order, that when an alternative option makes sense, they are the only ones who can't see it.
I asked one of my creditors to freeze the interest (even for 6 months) because I was finding it difficult to make the minimum payments, especially as barely 30% of what I paid was going on the debt with the rest going on interest. I didn't mind having to pay the same amount each month, but I wanted it to all go on the debt. They wouldn't even consider it without first seeing my I & E, because I'd been making the minimum for almost a year & they knew what my salary was. Even with the I & E, they said there was no guarantee that my payment offer would be accepted. They couldn't see that they'd be getting the same money, it would just not be partly interest charges, plus the debt would be cleared a lot sooner. I tried with 3 different members of staff & got nowhere.BSC #53 - "Never mistake activity for achievement."
