Emergency Tax Code OT WK1

My stepdaughter has just received her first payslip from a new job and despite having given her P45 to her new employer some weeks ago, she has been taxed using what I believe to be the emergency code OT WK1. She will of course take this up with her employer but is it up to her to reclaim any overpaid tax from HMRC direct or will it be repaid automatically through her next pay packet? Any advice gratefully received for a bitterly disappointed young lady!

Yes, like you say, tell her to take it up with her employer and again you are right, it will be rectified in her future pay.

Just checking - was the P45 a current one from this tax year.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • Thank you and yes it was from the current year. She has worked so hard over the last month for what seems like a pittance of pay so I want to be able to give her some hope!

It isnt a problem really, she will get it back.

Has she been working before this, or claiming JSA since April

Agree she will get it back but would ideally probably want it back now and not want to have until the tax year has ended in April 2013 and have to apply for a rebate.

If she is in continuous employment with the same company up until then, she might get a rebate direct from her present employers before then

She would only need to wait until April if the tax code is not corrected before then, as soon as the employer applies the correct one the tax situation will sort itself out.
