Smell of wee in patent leather shoes help?

Hi all,
I'm sure the answer is here somewhere, feel free to merge my thread later but i'm sort of on a time restraint and am useless with the search function!

My 4 year old had an 'accident' at school yesterday. By accident i mean sometimes if she is enjoying herself too much she leaves it too late to get to the loo!

The teachers changed her school tights and shoes and put them in a plastic bag for the rest of the day.

The tights are fine stuck in the washer but after rinsing out her patent leather Clarke's school shoes, this morning they still smell quite strongly of wee  I can't put them in the washer i don't think so how do i get the smell out of them before Monday?

Do you have any vodka in the house ? a good wipe out with this, and an hour in the fresh air should do it xx

They will still smell if they're wet but this will probably improve when they dry out properly. Stuff them with newspaper, allow them to dry out fully then put some bicarb in them for 48 hours and then hoover it out. This will take time of course, she'll have to wear other shoes for a few days next week.

Spray some bodyspray on to some kitchen roll and then stuff into the shoes, pop in the sunlight or the airing cupboard until it dries out.

Maybe try cat litter? I have heard that this helps dry and deodourise :)
  • Biological washing powder is good for getting rid of pet urine smells so perhaps that's worth a try? Got to be biological though.

I'd mix up a solution in a bucket and dunk the shoes in it. They should dry out reasonably quickly. I can't think of another way to sort it - masking the smell with a stronger one (fabreeze, alcohol) isn't really going to tackle the root cause.

    * Just read that you're short on time. I would do as above but use a face cloth to wipe down the shoes. This should minimize the wetting of the shoes but still tackle most of the cause of the smell.
  • I'd be inclined to put some dry rice sprinkled with a little lavender oil into popsocks and stuff the shoes with them. Then put each shoe in a popsock and put in more scented rice in a warm place. That might absorb the offensive moisture, not damage the shoes and add a nicer smell.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

Another vote for the bicarb on dry shoes - you do need to use lots and leave it for a long time. First time I used it was for kitten pee on a carpet, did a great job!

While the shoes are still damp, another option if you don't have vodka or don't want to use it, is a spray / sponge with vinegar, then wipe out and put somewhere warm to dry - looking out my window today that is likely to be near a radiator rather than in the sun!

If you don't already have some, may I suggest some cheap plimsolls from somewhere like primarni (which can be washed) that she can wear for the next few days until her smart shoes are sorted! They come in the right sorts of colours for school shoes; I'm sure the staff won't mind if she wears them in the meantime - just ring or send in a note to explain the issue.

I've never understood why pre-primary kids are made to wear 'smart' uniform for exactly this sort of reason! They are hard on clothes and shoes, tend to lose or grow out of them quite quickly, and uniforms tend to be expensive. I could understand if the uniform was a generic sort of dresscode including cheap elements like plain black trousers with plain polo shirts and unbranded trainers etc, but I've seen some tiny tots in blazers and ties! Does it really matter what shoes they wear? Are such young kids so brand/fashion aware these days that bullying will happen if someone is not wearing the 'right' trainers?
Anyway, rant over. I don't have kids and am unlikely to do so, so this doesn't really affect me, I just think it's rediculous!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

I agree with bicarb of soda for the less labour intensive method. If you fancy "attacking" them more actively :) spray with antibac spray, leave a minute, blot with kitchen roll, and repeat until the smell's gone. But I also like the idea with rice/lavender oil in a pop sock splishsplash - I'd probably do this after the spray/blot treatment to absorb moisture and cover any remaining niff :)
