Self Employed?

Ok, so my husband started working for a company 3 months ago as a labourer. He is on a low wage £40 per day.
He has only just been told that he is responsible for his own tax and national insurance payments (he has learning difficulties, so he doesnt take in information very well). How do we go about doing this? I have looked on HMRC website but its so confusing and its all about having your own business, which he doesnt. I would have thought, by the nature of his work and how he is paid that he is an employee, not self employed...?
I work for a family business and have done for many years so my tax and NI have always been done for me. Neither of us have a clue and I am just looking for some advice on who to speak to about his rights etc and where to start with all this....???
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like employer may be pulling a fast one here.
If they tell him what hours to do, how to do the jobs and he cannot work elsewhere or send somebody else to do it in his place, then he isn't self employed.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
As already said, it is the "control" an employer has and I agree he's an employee. But you have to decide if you treat it as cash in the hand as there doesnt seem to be any self employed deductions. Or if you make a complaint, you also stand a good chance to lose the job. Its really for you to decide as its your income. If you sign nothing for the money, take it as cash in the hand.0

If it's construction - then there is a system already in place for this.

If it's not - and the job doesn't meet the self employed requirements then he is not self employed. Unfortunately, if he tells them this then he probably won't be employed either.
