Gold fillings

Options
Are gold fillings money saving in the long run?

I'm rapidly approaching 60, and have a mouthful of composite fillings which over the years have gradually needed replacing. The latest casualty is in my farthest back molar in the top jaw, so not visible when smiling or laughing. To my knowledge that tooth has been filled at least twice before, so the filling is getting bigger and bigger.

I'm now thinking along the lines that the tooth will have a greater chance of lasting the rest of my life if I opt for a gold filling, which hopefully may never need replacing. Basically I am trying to justify to myself spending £480  on a gold filling as opposed to £100 on a white composite one.

Am I thinking along the right lines?

If you cant see it when you smile or talk, why not just go for the £18 one.

I have 2 bottom molars missing, havent had them for years, I dont even think about them to be honest.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

I love gold inlays (fillings). They are more complex to do and are made in a laboratory, but if well made and looked after can last a lifetime. They are by far the most biocompatible material and ideal for high stress places like back molars.

Gold is a fabulous dental material and certainly many dentists choose it when their own back fillings need replacing.

I'm very fond of gold fillings as well.

I wouldn't waste money on non functional teeth ( if a back molar doesn't have a tooth to bite against) but for a tooth that actually bites or chews, then yes, it's a restoration with the best chance of lasting you the rest of your life.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Just so you know where some of your money goes this is just one stage of making a gold shell crown which is exactly the same technique for gold inlays. Every one is made by hand in most labs and take hours of lab work. If you are really bored there are other videos for the other stages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XONUU1Uqv48
