Advice - JSA - Interview

Hi,
Fairly new to claiming jobseekers. I have been applying for around 15/20 jobs a week. The jobcentre matched me to a couple of jobs, which I didn't apply for as traveling distance was to far. Will the JC chase these up with the employer to see if I applied, and I am wondering what the implications will be if they find out I haven't applied, will I be sanctioned for this?

Also as a general question - if I get an interview with an employer and cannot attend through illness, what is the rule with this re sanctions again, if I inform the JC that I have an interview when I am signing on?

Thanks,

  • They can only check you have applied to the jobs they give you. They are not allowed and will not check your job search that much to contact all the jobs you have applied to. But if they gave you a job to apply for you should have said before hand that it was too far away and talk to them. As soon as a job is printed off at the job centre you have to apply for it. As far as checking them too I have no idea as I have applied for all they have suggested to me and even took in emails back from the employer for them to put in my file as proof they wont interview me for what ever reason.

Why are you asking about being sick? Are you sick? Have you missed a job interview? You can be sick but I would not use that as an excuse to a miss a job you didn't want or something like that.

I have never told the job centre that I have had a job interview as they do not need to know.

What do you mean by too far?

Basically yes they can check. Under the new rules you can soon end up with a three year sanction if you have three high level failures. If you fail to apply for a matched vacancy or do not go to an interview because you are sick then basically all the info gets sent to a decision maker, the jobcentre staff themselves do not sanction your money. If you can't make an interview because you are ill on its own is not enough. Call the employer make attempts to rearrange.

I was given jobs to apply for without checking with me where they were based, and when I got home I'd look them up on the map and find they were impossible to get to. There are plenty of business centres around here that are only accessible by car, and I am not going to walk down a dual carriageway to get there. So I just told my advisor when I went back that I hadn't applied for them due to transport issues, and they had a box on their form to write in why I hadn't applied for it. However, knowing what I do now I'd probably pretend I had applied for it, or else apply for it and hope I didn't get an interview. My advisor did tell me to buy a bike, then didn't understand why I couldn't cycle up the M1.

I also wouldn't tell them about any interviews unless I really had to. That way you can't get sanctioned for it. In the real world you may be offered a job that just simply isn't suitable; some of the jobs on the JC website for example are blatant cons, as I teach I would find vacancies that didn't seem to even offer a salary and had scam written all over them. I am sure had I had an interview I would have been offered it, then scammed.
