It pays to check - BT

I've just been checking our BT account. Thought I'd check out the calling features. It turns out we've been paying £4.46 per quarter for "Caller Display" which we did order, but there is a FREE service "BT Privacy at Home" that includes Caller Display. How come BT didn't inform us of this? Might only be a few pounds, but it's better in my pocket than BT's. It does pay to check - hope this might help someone else.

also worth checking if you are paying rental for the phone as well as line rental .0

Yea we were paying £3 per quarter rental for our phone which was quickly cancelled when I sent the phone back to BT and used a spare phone in the attic.
In addition to this we also saved a few quid by paying monthly by direct debit, hope this helps some of you.0 -

I was just checking my recent calls cost as my bill is almost due and I discovered what you did except mine is £1.75 a month/£5.25 a quarter. What a bunch of robbers! Needless to say I have now selected the free one and deleted the "gold plated" one.
*JUST HAD A QUICK CALCULATION, yours is also the same price as mine when you include the VAT.
Another point of note is that when I chose call barring a couple of years ago to prevent my kids ringing up the TV quizes etc, it was free but now BT charges for this.0 -
Similar situation.
I had BT Home security but because I didn't make any calls with BT they charged me for caller display. This is resolved by making at least 3 calls per quarter with BT not including 0800 etc.0 -

Sunshine - BT did inform you of this. There were adverts on TV, items in the national press, radio announcements AND it is included in the booklet that comes with your bills (or in an email if you are paper-free billing).
Then, it is up to you to decided what you want and arrange the changes.
Sorry, but expecting any large company to check every single customers account and make changes without your knowledge/consent is just not feasible. And it would be end up being very very costly to you, as prices would have to go up to pay for the staff/offices/etc etc.

Check the BT web pages at https://www.bt.com. There are several types of barring service.
1. Call Barring - which is rentable as you choose which types and levels of bar you want by keying in codes on your phone. You can then choose to remove the bar should you yourself want to make this type of call, using a security code, and then you can put it back on again. This is a self operated service.
2. The free services is Premium Rate Barring, and it does exactly what it says on the tin. It stops everyone from calling a number that is charged at a higher (premium) rate. However, you can still call other numbers like, local, national, international, free etc. This one is at customer request as it is a permanent bar until the contracted account holder arranges to have it fully removed.
