Oh dear, something seems to have got into my eyes.
Mine too. Hope it continues to go well for you and your son, Corelli. I'm sure there will be blips, if not major ups and downs, but at least you KNOW all is not lost.

So happy for you Corelli, and so happy for your son, too.

Seems to be contagious..... Good luck for the future to you and your family Corelli.
  • Amazing, what a lucky son he is to have you as a mum.

Thank you so much for coming back and update us, especially with such news. It will help many parents who are at the stage of despair thinking that the future will only get worse. Your thread shows that it might take time, but things can get better. Well done to your son!

Well said FBaby & thanks Corelli for starting & updating this thread. I shall admit to shedding a few tears too....

I have been in a difficult place with one of my two for some time now (very different situation but still involves MH issues & seeing a psychologist privately) & have no support in real life, so I'm very glad to read a thread that has a positive outcome (even though I'm dreadfully sorry that anyone is having a rubbish time IYSWIM). It gives me hope that life will improve for us too.
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

Hi JustKeepSwimming, I am so sorry to hear what you said about your offspring. This is appalling, that you have to see a psychologist privately and are getting no support yourself. Is the person under 18? If so, you as a family SHOULD be getting support. Harder in practise I know, as austerity has hit MH services particularly badly and we felt very 'dropped in it' when T came out of hospital. Our local CAFCS has lost over 40% of their funding in the last two years and we were very lucky indeed to get the psychologist to come to us. When my son was unable to get to see the psychiatrist I used to go along and we'd talk about him, make plans and she was really helping me feel a bit more hopeful. But the final drug that seems to have helped him so much was discovered by the Family Therapy bloke who had a neighbour with a daughter with severe anxiety disorder, I don't know about autism, and this is what she takes. I wish my son had had it years ago but possibly as he was younger, hadn't gone through puberty, there were difficulties.

But to get back to support for you. Your local carer's group might be able to offer ideas. Our's do all sorts of activities but I couldn't get to any of them as I was too busy with m'boy. However, we have a community counseling scheme which can offer open ended support. The fees are on an informal sliding scale and it has been a lot better than the tier one counseling offered on the NHS as there we can only have 20 weeks a year.

Without wanting to be too dramatic, going there has probably been a lifesaver as I went there out of habit whilst in my darkest moments and my counselor acted very appropriately.

Sending you all my very best wishes.

  • Thanks for updating. I'm so pleased to hear how things have improved for your son. I wish you, your son and the rest of your family well for the future.

May I ask the name of the medication that was effective for your son?

Thanks. I'm not sure if this is allowed, but the medication that helped with anxiety is Pregabalin and he takes Sertraline for depression.
