For that money, it's only really an all in one system for you. You would be bettere to hit avforums and get reading, then buy second hand - their for sale forums are excellent. Start simple with a DVD player, av receiver and your front three speakers. Then as you get a bit more cash, add your surrounds and sub. If you want a nice system, your budget won't get it, but you can certainly start! Component type systems mean you can upgrade as you go along - all in ones and you've got to replace the lot to upgrade - not good.

I bought this Pioneer system

a couple of months ago from play.com. It's designed for use with the Xbox 360 but there are 3 digital inputs for DVD players, Sky+ etc. and I think it's great for the price.
NB - you'd have to add your own DVD player, of course, as this is only a sound system. Falkirk Bairn0 -
I have these in my house - best budget set I have used so far. The main reason I bought them (apart from the low price) is that they're THX certified so I knew I'd be getting clean sound from them - and they really do deliver (don't be put off that they're usually pitched as PC speakers).
I use this DVD player which works well enough, I didn't choose it for any other reason than it upscales, was multi region hackable and was cheap0
