Renting after Repossession - do i tell mortgage company?

We were give a repossession order from the court for our house for 30th October...we moved into rented property on 26th October and have been checking the old house for post and can still get in...do I have to ring the mortgage company to tell them we have moved out and give them our new address?? Also we have received a letter saying we are liable to pay the next 3 months council tax on the property even though it is empty?? Could anyone give me some advice please....thanks very much x

we moved out and posted the keys back to the mortgage company telling them the house was surrendered. We also told the council what we had done and that we didnt live there anymore. I was out of work and qualified for council tax benefit on our new rented home. We didnt receive any demands for council tax on our old family home and had the tax on our new rented place paid for by the council anyway. Dunno if that helps but it was our experience.

I would get the post redirected as they may change the locks soon. Also its better not to just read final meters for utilities but to ask them all to come out and turn off the elec/gas/water to the property so bills cannot be generated and restarted after you left.
Not sure about the council tax, thought you got 6 months free if it hadn't previously been empty but hopefully someone will be along soon.

You can have up to 6 months free if the place is empty on council tax...phone them...
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Thanks very much fobr your replies. I went to our local advice centre today as they needed to see the repossession order for our HB claim, I mentioned the council tax and she said it was because they needed to see the repossession order too so she has scanned everything onto the system. I also asked british gas to turn off elec and gas supplies completely as the house is a repo and will be empty but she assured me they didnt need too...i still think they should! There is 91p on the electric and when that goes the alarm will start blaring until the battery runs down...old neighbours wont be happy!! Think I will ring mortgage company and up date them on things. Thanks again
