Possible sanction scare... please help

Hi guys. I would like to ask for help because 2 weeks ago, my adviser showed me a list of work openings and asked if there are some things there that I would like to apply to. I picked 2 and so she gave me a print-out of them jobs. The first one, I applied for but the second one turned out to be until 12midnight which would be hard for me as I have no car and it is quite far and dangerous if I should take the bus home. I have a meeting tomorrow with my adviser, do I tell her that I don't want to apply for the job or do I apply for it anyway first thing in the morning?

Does anyone have an idea how fast do they usually sanction people?Like how long they give you to apply for a job they printed out for you? Thanks. I would really like some input on this.

You need to be honest and explain why you didn't apply for it, what times are you currently available on your agreement? If you are available till midnight you need to change it.

Your adviser can check if you have applied for the job or not so if you lie and say you have you may be caught out anyway.

As for the sanctions, if you are matched to a vacancy and you fail to apply before the vacancy closes your adviser will send the doubt to a decision maker and only that decision maker can sanction your benefit. As for how long they give you, realistically is there any reason why you cannot apply the day you are given the details? Reasonably you have till the position closes, but I would expect the person to apply the same day or the day after. You would have to prove good cause if you didn't apply at the earliest opportunity.
  • Thanks for your reply! The times in my agreement are 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. Also, how do I know that it is a 'matched vacancy'? Is this 'matched vacancy' the ones that I'm required to apply for? Because this particular job was just lying on the table on list, so we didn't particular search for it on the computer during our session. I'm really left out of the dark regarding these sanctions. Does this mean that JSA automatically do check-ups to all jobs given to you if you applied for or not? Or only when your adviser thinks you're slacking off?

Only input I can give is to learn for next time. If they give you a job that they print off You have to apply for it. I usually used to say to the advisers that I don't need any help from them as I can look online myself for the vacancies

Just tell them you applied for it whether you did or not. Or just apply for it anyway. If your application goes further, ask the employer if you can work different hours, if not, thank them and tell them you can't work til 12. You've applied, and that's what the JCP wants to see. There's little you can do if you can't work to those hours.

Great idea - then when the JCP contact the employer to check the OP will be shown to be a liar.

OP, you've got time before your appt to apply. It may be that someone else finishing at midnight lives near you, so you can travel together. You don't know unless you try! ;)

That's funny, because when i was on JSA and if i was struggling to apply for jobs I told the odd little white lie. Here's the thing, they don't check up on every single job you say you applied for. In fact, I'll wager they rarely check on any job you've applied for. Speaking from experience.

Apply for it. Realistically it's likely most who apply wont even get an interview.

    ;)

They can also be called a liar, if the employer just deletes it, or bins it due to the sheer number of people applying. This happens all the time.

Apply for it, and state on the application you can only work til 7pm. That way, you will get weeded out immediately and won't have to waste their time.
  • Am I being naive? I think the OP has done everything right!

S/he rang for further information prior to applying for the job (or was it that s/he read the printout more throughly?) so that s/he could do a really good application, and elicited the information that the job was until midnight. This fell outside the times the OP is available for work, and so s/he did not apply. I don't see that any rules have been breached here except that the work adviser showed the applicant a job which s/he couldn't actually undertake!

(What I would do is try to find ANOTHER job to apply for, that falls within the times I could actually manage.)
