On a daily basis movements will be linked to news and events...even profit taking and buying opportunities....
Longer term there looks like a link to growth and health in the economy..

i think you should rename yourself as "tinfoilhat".

You obviously do not know what is going on and have decided to reply to my point with a cheap shot soundbite.

    Well done.

...but will probably make a lot of sense for others.

Howcome the dow jones is up 0.5% at time of writing?

More shares have risen in price than fallen. That's the nature of stock exchanges.

Can you provide any evidence to support your assertion that market prices are determined by someone deciding what they want the price to be and punching it into an algorhythm? You do understand that there is more than one algo trader out there and they are not all colluding together, right?

And some of them have faster feeds than others.

    Are you a trader?

He will deny it. But I can assure you that Chewy is a trader.

He can be seen down the market most mornings, selling dodgy DVD's, Rolex watches, an Nike trainers from the back of a white van. Cash only.... minders at each end of the street....

But that doesn't mean he knows anything about Wall Street, Bollinger Bands, or EFT's - and he thinks that BTL is a sandwich.

High frequency traders with very fast connections, servers closer to the exchange etc just get to take prices sooner they don't get to decide what prices are.

    Are you certain of that?

Not sure I buy it but I did hear some economist on the radio last night suggesting that the construction work etc required to rebuild would create a sufficient boost to the economy to offset the days production lost - the damage costs are likely to largely be borne by reinsurers many of whom will be non US based. In other words the US economy will be getting a shed load of non US money fed into it to pay people to rebuild etc.

Well there is that I guess.

But so much of a to do is made when the UK has a day off, such as the diamond jubilee, and it's blamed for so many parts of the economy that saw a decline, I would have thought that half of the east cost of the US, and indeed, their financne capital being shut down for a couple of days, and disturbed for several weeks would have had an effect.

Maybe we'll see the effect later in the sales figures etc.

Just couldn't quite understand how such a disaster could see the dow up after being shut down for 2 days! Even on the share boards, investors who have years of experiences were a little confused by the situation.

Not certain but I don't see how a fast connection allows you to decide what someone else will pay or accept for an asset.

I don't think that HFT is 'right' in the way that it is currently being done as it gives some people preferential access to the market.

Do you have any evidence to back up your assertion as that woul be a clear form of market abuse.
