any advice on a new slow cooker please

Hi everyone

My old slow cooker has just given up the ghost so could do with any recomendations for a new one please. There are only four of us in the house (2 adults, 2 kids) so only need a small one anyone found one which is good but cheap? Also can I use the crock pot from the old one in a normal oven?

Mine was from Co-Op last year at around £25. I would say go for a bigger one if possible as freezing leftovers is the best bit!
The first 2-3 times I used mine it smelled funny - like when you use a new grill... Put me off for a while, but I resurrected it last week after reading this board, and the funny smell had gone! Yay!

Can I also ask a question re slow cookers? My local supermarket is selling 3.5l ones for £12.99. Would this be big enough for a family of 5?

I would definitely say get the biggest you can afford!

I bought a 4.5ltr one and its great. It was £19.99 ion sainsburys.

I tried for ages to get one but they were always out of stock as soon as they came in - very popular.

It has high, low and automatic switches which I find really useful.

Now my other sons back home though I wish I had got a 6 ltr one lol

I found I was pushing the food down last time to fit the lid on.

It depends on your protion size, but I would say not.

Like the above poster says, go for the bigest you can afford, I originally bought the 3.5 l cookworks one and it served 3 good size portions but I have now had to upgrade to one this size

Its a hefty 6.5l but I made a beef casserole in it the other day and it served all four of us well with some leftovers. Also with the larger ones you can cook a whole chicken or joint of meat in it.

Thanks Gremlin - I'll look out for a much bigger one then. The Argos one isn't a bad price, but unfortunately we don't have Argos here, and they don't deliver here either. I suppose I could ask my mum to bring one over next time she comes . . .

How old is it?

Mine (MR 6.5 L) broke down a few weeks ago - i'd had it for just over a year. I called MR and told them i had no receipt as it was a present, they checked the model and serial no. to make sure it had been made in the last 2 years and sent a new one out within 2 days.:T pre MSE I would have gone out and bought a new one :rolleyes:

I guess yours may well be older.

Justamum they are cheaper on Tesco online http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999571/Nr.99.aspx and they have them in the store near me, IIRC they have one in Douglas don't they, might be worth a try I know they don't deliver to IOM.

I have the 6.5 stainless one aswell, usually the meals I do in it are for me and DP only, apart from roasts, but means I can do big batch cooks of chilli, bolognese sauces etc.
