Can I refuse supervision?

Just a quick question.

I have been told that I must have regular supervision with someone who is less qualified than I am, who has no training and who I believe to be incompetent and not in a position to do this.

Can I refuse supervision from this person and ask to receive it from somebody else? I believe that supervision is useful but not if it is conducted by somone who has no understanding of my role.

Well, your bosses must think he has the ability to supervise you.

Is it possible that he is less qualified on paper but has more experience in the role.

What makes you say he has no understanding of your role, how do you know this.

How long have you both been working for the company

  • I don't think you can legitimately refuse supervision off someone you don't want. However, if you have a particular concern, you do have the right to articulate this, but if you choose to do this, make sure its professional and constructive.
  • It seems that the bosses think that this person is able. Unfortunately.

The person does not have any experience in my role and no understanding of it as it is a responsible position for which you need several years of training and they have had none. They have been working there longer, however my salary exceeds theirs due to my experience. Added to this, the person has been known to blatantly lie in order to make themselves look good and other employees bad. Pretty awkward.

Has the company explained to you why they feel the need for you to be supervised?
  • Are you sure you're giving this person a fair chance?
  • I'm not being supervised as part of disciplinary proceedings or anything. It is something that should be more an educational experience. But if this person doesn't know anything, how can they impart knowledge. I can't ask work related questions of this person as they do not know the answers. I have given them a chance. When I've asked a question on a couple of occasions, I have been told that they don't know. So I don't ask any more.
  • ask for another member of management to sit in?

IMO if they are supervising they should know, otherwise what it the point to it?

Without knowing what your job is, consider the possibility that the supervision has nothing to do with your expertise but may relate to your behaviour.

You may be angry over this, and it shows a little in your posting here, and it may be justified. But could it be that the problem is your attitude to customers, responses to requests from colleagues, your belief that your way of doing the job is better but is contrary to the procedures they define for the job or something else of this kind where you are not doing the job as they expect or one small part of the job you profess expertise in is not being done the way they want it done.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
