Is my tax code correct following P87?

Thanks for any help in advance.

In 2011/12 I received a £212.40 refund for the tax relief on business mileage and my tax code was also changed to 854L, based on personal allowance of £7475 and the Job Expenses (mileage) of £1066.
My 2012/13 tax code is now 917L and I have no idea why it has changed. Plus, As I still have the additional Job Expenses relief attatched (I think), I'm presuming I'm already getting relief for my business miles and so this negates the need for another P87. My mileage is roughly the same each year.

Do I need to contact HMRC over any of this or does it seem correct? I'm intrigued as to why my tax code went up in 2012/13 to 917L, and just wanted to check that I should still have the job expenses relief addition, that it shouldn't have been taken off at 2011/12 year end.

Thanks again

the tax allowance for 2011-12 was 7475
for this year it is 8105

so with a mileage adjustment of 1066 that would be 9171 allowance so a code of 917L

The standard tax allowance for 2012-13 is £8105. So adding the same mileage allowance of £1066 in gives a total of £9171 - which translates to a tax code of 917L.

Whether it is correct or not I guess depends on whether that amount of mileage allowance is still applicable ?
  • Thanks both, that makes sense. As my mileage has been pretty much the same, would I be ok then to just continue on as is, or should I get my tax code put back to standard 810L and submit a new P87?? Does it make any difference? I presume at some point HMRC will want to check I am still doing the business mileage.

Sounds like they have given you a tax code for 2012/13 based on last year so it should be close to accurate, as you say.

You can submit a P87 after April 2013 showing exact figures for 2012/13 just to keep you right.
