Concerned about baby's development

Hi guys, i was just after some reassurance/advice/similiar experiences about my baby's development.

He is currently 10 and a half months old (although 5 weeks prem) and no where near crawling, walking, cruising on furniture, moving etc :( I am getting concerned about whether he is developing as he should.

He is quite happy to sit for any length of time and reaches for toys but makes no attempt at any further movement. I have tried various ways of tempting him (toys, showing him etc) but to no avail.

I know i shouldn't compare but other babies his age seem to be very mobile or at least attempting it and i am beginning to get a little concerned. I have spoken to the HV and they aren't worried at all but i can't help it :/

On the upside he is a very happy little man, just not mobile

Please reassure me that he will do something at some stage :(

10 months isn't that old..I wouldn't worry yet, if the HV are not concerned. He will do it at his own rate

Each baby develops at their own pace.

Please get in touch with your health visitor who will be able to give you specific advice/reassurance based upon their direct observations of your baby.

Enjoy it while you can! I bet by Christmas he'll be off and into everything.

Relax, give it another couple of months. Most babies will start crawling between 8-10 months but not all, and it's not necessarily a good or bad sign when they start earlier or later.

Why do I say that? Well, just looking at my two boys: DS2 was walking at 10 months - and the reason for that is severe sensory problems which have caused severe language delay, whereas DS1 didn't start crawling until he was nearly a year old and at not quite 11 his receptive language was tested as being over 16y7m.

  • Thank you for the responses. I know i shouldn't get hung up on it but it is so difficult to see other babies younger than him doing thinhs he's not and having other mums ask why he's not doing anything :(

Other mums really can be the worst can't they?

Don't stress at this stage. My sibling didn't crawl, walk or talk words that people could understand for several years, giggled when my mother - a primary teacher - tried to teach them letters, mostly just sat and smiled with a blank expression. My mother was initially stressed they were nothing like me or other children, then decided to accept my sibling was 'backwards' (appropriate phrase at that time). Today my sibling is clearly well above average intelligence, totally normal developmentally, a very successful head of customer services for a major company. :D

I think we do it to ourselves. My kids were toddling at that age and everyone kept saying "ooh, aren't they early walkers" like it was abnormal. With hindsight and absence of new mommy hormones, I can see it was mostly just in my head. We all just want our kids to be normal. However, "average" means in the middle - so some kids walk earlier and some kids walk later. Remember: "Lies, damned lies and statistics." ;)
  • the worst mums are us ourselves! we find it difficult to have confidence in knowing what we are doing is right or wrong. we worry constantly about development and i'm sorry to tell you it doesnt get any easier or different.
i have 4 kids- 14/9/4/7months. eldest 2 boys, youngest 2 girls. they have all done things differently. its very hard to believe people when they tell you this but it really is true. no 2 kids are ever the same, even siblings.

My daughter was 5 weeks prem too. She didn't walk until she was 18 months. I wouldn't worry :) Some babies never crawl, one day they just set off walking !
  • I remember those times. For mine, it was late teething. I just remember smiling and saying "Well, he won't have to put it on his CV will he?".
10.5 months with premie adjustment is no time at all xxx
Once they got mobile I was hoping for the sitting still times. As teenagers I can't get my boy up! (nor my girls, but that is another story ;-)
