Would you ever claim against your employer?

I've been approached by my Union and have been advised to make a claim for personal injury against them after an incident at work left me unable to work for a number of weeks.
I've never claimed any form of compensation other than redundancy. If you had sufferred at the hands of your employer would you make a claim against them, or would you not bother for fear of reprisals further down the line.

It depends on the employer, my job, and the accident.
If I worked in a low grade job for a massive employer with not much hope for promotion etc, yes, I would.
If I worked for a small employer or if I had career aspirations, no I probably wouldn't.
If it was a minor accident that was just one of those things (broke a toe tripping over something), no I wouldn't.
If it was a major safety failing on the part of my employer (I worked in a factory and lost a finger in a machine due to a safety guard being missing/broken), yes, I would.Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j
OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.
Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.0 -
That is why they have Insurance..Yes I would claim.0

It really depends on circumstances. Overall I would say no except:
I wasn't paid full sick pay whilst off
I was leaving anyway and even then I probably wouldn't if I was paid full sick payDon't trust a forum for advice. Get proper paid advice. Any advice given should always be checked0 -
No, but then I own the company I work for
Outside of that then it does really depend on the circumstances and the size of the employer. There are some accidents that are truly the blame of the employer and some small employers would be "happy" that you're claiming. Others are more your fault but by a technicality you can claim your employers are liable which will get less favour with a small company but probably fairly invisible to a giant multinational.
It certainly will never be a good way to get a promotion0 -
If I had career ambitions within a company, then no.
If I didn't / had plans to leave anyway / it was an injury that would have long lasting effects / employer was negligent and continuing to endanger others / hadn't been off on full pay etc. then I probably would.0 -
Where i work there are no accidents and if there are,its your fault and you could well be disciplined.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

May old payroll dept where I worked told us people were claiming persoanl injury all the time as they had been injured at the warehouse or in the kitchens and the company would not pay them full pay if they couldn't work due to the injury.malcindebt wrote: »I've been approached by my Union and have been advised to make a claim for personal injury against them after an incident at work left me unable to work for a number of weeks.

The injury is to my right arm. I was walking through the high bay storage and a large box has fallen from one of the upper shelves (approx 16ft high) and caught me on the shoulder. It dislocated my shoulder and broke my collar bone. I also have some tendon damage and damage to the cartlidge and the shoulder socket.
I have returned to work on light duties after 7 weeks off.
The specialist I saw at the hospital has said it's unlikely I'll get full movement back in my shoulder due to the damage.0 -
Would the company pay for e.g. extra physio if you need it? For that sort of injury I'd be inclined to try and get something like that from them if needed, rather than go in with an attitude of 'I want compensation' (not saying you do, unlike most of the British public
) Excuse any mis-spelt replies, there's probably a cat sat on the keyboard0
