In our house, paying extra for something because you couldn't be bothered to think about the consequences of your choice is called "stupid tax". Going on to national TV to bleat about being conned when you failed to work out there was a cheaper alternative is merely announcing your stupidity to the world. Programmes like Fake Britain and Watchdog are full of those sorts of articles - to me they really detract from the stories about real cons and rip-offs.

Not all of the supermarket "tricks" are deliberately designed to con you. I fully accept that some of them most certainly are but there are others which stem purely from the laziness or over-worked-stress or pure stupidity of the individual who stocked that shelf. Sometimes stuff just gets put out in the wrong place and it isn't always some great corporate plot to steal money from your purse.

When I am flush with cash, I like to use convenience foods so that I don't have to waste time cooking or even thinking about cooking and I have more time to go out and do other things. When I have less cash, I can't really afford to go out and do other things so it leaves more time to enjoy the cooking from scratch anyway. I want supermarkets to stock the convenience stuff to give me the choice.

Re microwave rice - it never tastes 'real' to me. My OH showed me how to make perfect boiled/steamed rice a few years ago, either sticky or fluffy, and honestly I could eat a plate of it on its own. Nom.

I like the sachet rice too but I stock up when it is on offer or I can find it in the cheapo shops, which happens quite often.

Yes I only ever buy it on offer too.

Through eating less and more simply due to income concerns I look for items that mean some preperation or look for offers, value for money brands...because I eat less and portion items and being single can mean some food is wasted, buying so called prepared veg can do a few meals and not really cost me much more...especially of I but when they drop the price as they often do.

But yes I have some of the rice in microwave sachets too.

Of late I have had to go down the yellow stickered near the sell by date route...

  • Seen in Morrisons this morning: Half price Trimmed Leeks, £1.00 instead of £2. Other label shows price as £2.00 per Kg. Packet weight is 500g.
Normal price would be £1.00, where is the bargain?

I find most of my shopping is looking out constantly for special offers. A lot of my eating habits are based around foods that are constantly on offer, cornflakes, frozen products etc and I can still eat healthily.

    That's generally me...

But I have purchased fresh veg(a good one of late is carrots, onions, parsnip and turnip)£1 but a turnip the same size as what is in that variety pack is 75p.

I get a few meals out of that. On the other hand Aldi's have a soup mix for 89p(with prepared as in diced/sliced)leeks, potato, carrots, parsnip)I can get 3 or 4 meals out of that and it saves time and helps me not having to attempt to cut vegetables up.

I use it in casseroles/stews. When there is space in the freezer often frozen veg is a better option.

Sometimes fresh veg is more expensive.

I see that the series has been repeated in recent weeks in the early hours with someone signing it.

  • Snow not far from us today.

I'm going to have a stock up today I think just in case, got a fair bit in anyway but would be a good idea to add some bottled water, UHT milk, more soups etc, tinned fish/meat. I might also treat myself to the camping gas stove and kettle I've been promising myself for years (I do go camping so it wouldn't be just for emergencies!).

I'm in Kent and its snowing now ,but I have no shopping to get as I always keep long life milk in the cupboard just in ncase and my freezer is crammed full .I shall be baking this morning anyway to fill up the biscuit and cake tins as I never buy shop made cakes and prefer my own HM stuff.I too cannot see the point in pre prepared stuff unless you cannot do it yourself I have lymphodema in my right arm so it doesn't work very well but I have a super spud peeler that over the years has been honed to perfection for peeling spuds and veg (I'd be lost without it )so I can manage to peel everything ok.I have a friend though who has problems so at least once a week I will pop round for a cuppa and peel her a big tuppaware box of spud/carrots etc and put them in water in the fridge for her so she just takes what she needs to use daily.I get a cuppa and a chat and she gets her veg peeled we are both happy :):)
