Jobseekers Allowance

Hi

I am currently working for the NHS but I have had enough, the stress is killing me.....would I be able to claim Jobseekers Allowance if I just quite my job...I have been working full time for the past 15 years and have been actively looking for another job for the past few months but everyone seems to be employing people on the employer subsidy schemes which excludes me....I seriously can not keep doing this job...

Thanks for reading this, really am at the end of my rope here...

  • I dont think you can claim if you just give up your job, but someone more knowledgable will be along shortly.

I have had a month or so on jsa after being in continous employment for 15 years, jsa near gave me a breakdown,it is £71 per week. If you are used to a decent wage then jsa will be a shock , I found it impossible to manage on, without selling items/getting into debt and taking out a payday loan, its been the most grim time ever.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • Thanks for replying Frugal...just dont know what to do for best....I know I can go out on the sick with stress but I really just want to quit, never hated a job as much as this...I have been applying for loads of retail jobs (the type of job where you go to work, do your work, and just go home again) but I think my age is against me now (43) and I am over qualified, I have actually been dumbing down my CV just to apply for these but still nothing...been reading about JSA and there seems to be two different types, one being contribution based...would anybody know if i would be entitled to that?

    Thanks...
  • unfortunately you wont get a dime for a period of time (could be quite a few weeks/months) because you gave up your job willingly.

i don't understand why you say you cant get another job, what employer subsidy schemes i haven't heard of this?
    My Signature is MY OWN!!
  • Bad news, I'm afraid. If you leave your job without just cause, your JSA can be stopped for up to 26 weeks.

You do sound stressed. Could you take a holiday and really focus on applying for other jobs?
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).

This should give you some more info about JSA. Normally if you resign you don't get any JSA for so many weeks but last year my sister walked out of her carers job and still managed to get JSA straightaway.
She'd gone back to work after breaking her elbow and an old man with dementia literally kicked off one night and kicked her on her bad elbow. She walked out in extreme pain there and then. Once she explained the whole circs to JSA they let her sign on as she'd left for what they deemed to be a good reason.
I don't know if they'd count stress as a good reason though. It was only fear of that that kept me in my god-awful job with the CSA last year. I was soo close to just resigning and sodding the consequences but fortunately I was saved by voluntary redundancy this year.
Sorry I know that doesn't really help you but I do feel for you. Good luck to you, whatever you decide to do, it's an awful situation for you to be in.

Any jobs that are being advertised in the Job Centres are being shown as only available to people that have been on Jobseekers Allowance for 13 weeks, this is where you would work for a period for an employer for your Jobseekers Allowance....I wouldnt even mind doing this as it would give me some recent experience of the type of job that I would do...
