My Oh has worked for both large and small company's.In his experience larger company's gave him 30 days holidays + bank holidays.Good pension schemes, paid when off sick(although he was only off once sick). Also plenty of cover when people were taking holidays.
The smaller company , no pension scheme, crap wages, struggle when someones off on holiday.Minimum holidays.0 -
A lot depends on the sector, and the company itself, but in general the large companies are more likely to go by the book and take compliance with all the employment laws and regulations seriously.
When someone comes on here to report that they are not being paid or not getting payslips, or the employer seems not to be passing on tax and NI or tells them they must be self employed, it is almost always a small company that is involved.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?

I think it must just depend on the firm or nature of the business, rather than if its a big or small company, As I said earlier I never had things like pensions or sick pay anywhere I've worked0 -
Small companies may mean your role is more varied and challenging because there isn't a hundred people to specialise in separate things. However large companies have more oppotunities for lateral transfers and promotion.
I work for one of London's largest employers and the opportunities have been great. I have a good pension, flexible working, annual pay rises and have been supported to gain two qualifications, etc. There are policies and SOPs so that things are done professionaly and you can raise queries and complaints with HR.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0 -
I'd say it's horses for courses, but either way it's about the relationships you form. !!!! someone off in a big company and there's plenty of other people out there who you can still get on with, but if you do well, it's harder to get that noticed. The other thing is, it's possible to keep your head down.
Get knitted in well to a small company and it's like going to work with your mates everyday, but if you don't fit in, it's a nightmare.
The other thing is, you get more variety in a small firm. Yeah, you might have to clear the bog one day, but you see far more of what the company does, so appreciate it better. Whereas to me, working in a big firm doing the same thing in the same place day after day is my idea of hell.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?0 -

Yeah I miss this, My previous company and new company both do the same kind of thing, In my previous job I got to do all the various jobs so had plenty of variety, in this job I do 1 job day in day out and it is boring as hell but I guess this is why my boss said to me in the interview I am more experienced than 90% of his staff, shame he didn't match the pay to the experience.0 -
I have worked for one large company within a certain parent company, and it was very much of the bigger isn't better, there were so many cliques within just the store that I worked in, you were just a number there and it was horrible.
Now I am employed by a different company within the same parent, and it couldn't be more different, as a company we are as big as the other, but each and every person is regarded as a person, in our store we have a team of 10 (that includes the 3 managers) and we are a team, everyone mucks in and does whatever needs doing, as we mostly do part time hours, the bosses don't object to nipping out for a quick fag break (as long as it's quiet), and even the store manager is a dab hand at brewing up.
We are all on first name terms with the area manager, who is also known for rolling his sleeves up and helping out.
So I guess it all depends on the ethos of the company, not always the size.0 -
I suppose its the more personal thing, you know everyone and can talk to everyone, It makes for a better working atmosphere, OK your there to work but I find little things like that make all the difference, It's nice to be able to go to the loo without getting the evil eye.
That sounds more like some people are just jerks where you're working now. That's got nothing to do with the size of the company...If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything0 -
I do think small companies do feel like small families but with families they do tend to take the mick and ask outrageous things from time to time. For me I like the anonymity you get from working for a bigger company, you can do your job and then go home, as I see it a job is a means to an end and allows me to live my life.0

Quite simple for me, ideally prefer to work for a medium size company around 50-200 employees. For me as an employee with a big company you are just a number, and a small company you have the top people like the directors to close to you for my liking.0
