24 hours later I was called into a meeting where my manager informed me that the policy had actually changed and I now need to give a month of notice. When I questioned this I was told that it came into effect when I was on annual leave at the end of September and it simply "slipped their minds" to tell me/get me to sign a new contract on my return.

Apologise and tell them that it "slipped your mind" to tell them before that you reject the new contract's terms and conditions but that you're prepared to work on a without prejudice basis up until the date previously agreed with your boss (see here).

They gave me a new contract to read over the weekend. I've been told I need to bring it back (signed) tomorrow.

I'm sure they have. Don't sign that under any circumstances - either they accept that you'll keep working up until the previously agreed upon date or you leave there and then. You don't need to do anything else except leave your current employer's job in time to take up your new offer of employment.

Where do I stand with this? I obviously don't want my company to give me a negative reference if I insist on leaving in a week but I'm also not sure if what they're doing is right. :o

I'm sure what they're doing isn't right. As for the reference - they have to tell the truth in any reference they give but clearly this might be an issue. You can't have this one both ways, I'm afraid; if you need to stand up to them in order to get what you're entitled to, you have to understand that they may not appreciate being stood up to.

I was being sarcastic. It's my way. ;)

Yes. I enjoy your various "conversations". But most of the countering statements in the one in this thread were not unreasonable in general terms when dealing with an employer who is trying it on when they realise they may have a problem in getting staff in the time available to them..
  • i would speak to Acas and/or citizen advice bureau.

But i would just stick to the one week notice otherwise you could lose your new job and be stuck in a job you don't like.

At the end of the day you didn't get on in your current one and you liked the duties of the new job. I hope you wont lose out on too much money if they decide to be iffy with you. But it's not your concern that they are short staffed, they did not give you notification of the new notice increase requirements and you didn't sign another contract they had ALREADY accepted your one week notice.

What's worse is you give in and agree to the extended notice to leave, lose the new job because you can't stand ASAP, then lose your current job because you've handed in your notice. Now you've lost both jobs.

I agree with the above. Give ACAS a call just to confirm where you stand legally. I'm sure they cant change the rules now though, they have to have given you the new contract in writing.
