Out of date chocolate

My GF used to buy chocolate on offer and hoard it. Then she went on a healthy regime and so much of it has gone well out of date.
I have been slowly using up things like the mars bars that expired around christmas. Now we have some big 200g bars, some are 4 months out of date and others are more like 18 months. Will the really old ones still be OK?
Not much can go wrong with chocolate can it - sometimes it just gets crystals in it, right? I was thinking of melting some down and making 'cornflake cakes' or the like
Any other ideas? Mmmmmmnnnn chocolate

I'd eat it or cook with it........no question where chocloate is concerned
I believe you can freeze it if you have got any that hasn't already gone out of date, although I have never tried this myself, it never lasts long enough!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p
In England we have Mothering Sunday & Father Christmas, Mothers day & Santa Clause are American merchandising tricks:mad: Demonstrate pride in your heirtage by getting it right please people!0 -
I can't understand how she didn't eat it I mean it was in the house how can anyone resist0

She tends to only eat really dark stuff now - like green and blacks - and she has like a 10 bar library - seriously, they look like books on a shelf. She probably eats less than 20 grams of chocolate a day though!
So the conclusion is that the out of date stuff will be fine then?0 -
should be fine even if it is discoloured - there can be some separation if its old doesn't really affect the flavour
Just don't eat it if its hairy ! :-)TANSTAAFL !0 -
My thoughts exactly - they bung dates on everything now dont they!
I wouldnt like to think how it might get hairy!0 -
What a coincidence! I made cornflake cakes, twice just last week with chocolate that was a year out of date (I was trying to use up last year's supply of easter egg chocolate, before stating on this year's mountain). The chocolate itself tasted fine and had no white marks on it so I figured if it tasted ok it would be ok to cook with...... and it was. DD had fun making them and eating them. HTH0

Oh no you've just reminded me of some easter egg choc i'd hidden away under the stairs. Now i've just had to go and get it out and put some in a bowl, a bit more than would have liked, the rest is in the freezer.
Why did i read this post?? Insert head banging icon.0 -
I made some chocolate nests for easter. Simply substitute cornflakes for crushed up Shredded wheat. For a change I also tried making them with white chocolate....and we couldn't eat them fast enough. Probably a good job I ran out of chocolate.Baby Year 1: Oh dear...on the move

My auntie buys cheap chocolate off a market stall thats well out of date. Shes like the size of an elephant but 76 and very healthy. Ive tried a peice, and its not as though it goes mouldy or anything but the taste is not strong. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Chocolate is fine kept up to about 1 year:eek: provided it isn't combined with other perishables .....as in a chocolate-covered toffee bar:rolleyes:
