what is the law, is there a law???

I have just started work in a petrol filling station and have been given my hours ranging throughout the day. I have been given a shift which finishes at 10 pm then I start again at 6 the following morning. Is this right first of all.
my other concern is that there is only one member of staff in the building from 6pm until 9.30 a.m. one goes off at ten as the other comes on 10 - 6 and then they go when the new one comes on at 6.
my concern here is the doors to the garage are open all night. can this be allowed? shouldnt they be working through a hatch??
I know I need a job but, to put myself in this position for a minimum wage is quite bad and considering that I would also not get a break on this shift as the door cannot be closed. I just need a bit of advice on where I stand. thankyou in advance.

Working Time Directive is what you need to read up on. I'm a tad rusty but there is something about 11 hour breaks between shifts however I think these can be consolidated at a later stage over a certain period. HSE have a good link explaining rest breaks (daily and weekly) http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/workingtime.htm
I suppose you may have to decide if you want the job or not.0
