I think you want a clear answer on whether you are coeliac, so presumably a biopsy by a gastroenterologist. Everything hinges on that really.

Don't blame you for not Googling and you are spot on to say you can prove or disprove almost anything. :T I start with PubMed which is a highly respected index of published journal articles on health and biology http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
Then I try to stick with sites like Google Scholar, the NHS, universities, charities, governments, fitness/ sports training and registration bodies like the ACSM, degree type textbooks on Google Books, anything unbiased and non commercial. In this case there didn't seem to be much research carried out at all, hence the second link which is NOT a reputable site but the doctor's credentials are at least decent. :o

I think i might push for that first...I know these things can be a long-haul process of elimination and am prepared for that. I also know the hard work has to be done by me - if I can just persuade my GP to get someone to guide me as to what I should be doing, then I'd be very happy. I often feel like a nuisance because when I ask for help with my weight, he palms me off with tablets (orlistat) or to the 'dietician' with the grand old 'eat well' plate. I am just coming off Citalopram after PND and I needed him to sign a form for Cambridge - he said he wasnt going to do it until I nearly broke down in the surgery. He suggested I should investigate bariatric surgery instead!!!! My BMI at the time was 34.5 and I believe it needs to be 40 for surgery to even be considered. So I pointed this out and persuaded him to let me try Cambridge instead.

I have even considered paying for an appointment with a private GP to see if I can get the referral for the coeliac biopsy and then my private care would take over but I'm not even sure that's possible.

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. It is helping immensly.
  • Hi ooopsa

Ive just been diagnosed with pcos and have been reading up on it today. Scary stuff when you need to lose weight. Im blessed with kids so dont have to worry about that element.

Its been enlightening seeing my symptoms written down. I thiught id check on my favourite forum to see if others have similar problems. I have found it hard to lose weight weight although tbh i havent really tried too hard until now. The best ive done is lose a couple of lb then maintain until more creeps on.

Anyways good luck and chin up i have had to rely on citalopram anti d for a few years which helps along with councelling although that i pay for:-(. Im going to go back to the docs and ask for help with my diet. Also my cousin has ceoliac so there is a sli chance i may

    Kp xx

    Hi,

Thanks for replying. I'm very lucky that the PCOS has not affectedy fertility - I have 3 beautiful kids! I have most of the other symptoms though - weight, acne, hair, etc etc.

It is a relief when you're diagnosed but when I was, I wasn't overweight - was young, a single parent who lived on caffeine and nicotine! Then I had my youngest 2 (stopped smoking) and piled on the weight and it seems to have stayed ever since!

I'm just coming off citalopram so I know how it feels.

I hope things work out for you. You can PM me any time if you need to 'chat'!
  • Fire Fox - I tried to PM you but it says your messages are full! I have a couple of questions but didn't want to put them on here. If you're reading, I would be very grateful.

You said the metformin upset your tummy. It does, with some people. Depends on what dose you were on. You might have to lower the dose, or split it up in to e.g. morning and night.

My DH takes this, and he also has had 'tummy problems' i.e. a duodenal ulcer in the past. He takes 500 mg, but for a long time he had to split it into 250 mg in the morning and 250 mg at night. He couldn't tolerate the whole 500 mg. His cousin, by contrast, takes 1000 mg and it doesn't seem to upset him at all. It seems to be a matter of getting the dose right.

My SD has recently lost about 9 stone with Slimming World and she too has PCOS. She says, however, that it's mainly a matter of eating healthy food and SW has re-educated her.

  • Hey Daisy, how are things going with this?

I noticed in an early post, you wanted something to make you feel good. Do you exercise?

I haven't lost much "weight" per se, but I dropped a dress size doing Insanity. Start slow and gentle and work up - release those endorphins :)

    Good luck,

    HBS x

    Thanks for asking!

I'm still not much further foward.

I sort of 'woke up' to the fact that I binge eat on occasion which I believe has a lot to do with the fact that I struggle to find things to eat that don't bloat me and make me feel
Uncomfortable. I tend to organise family meals and forget myself, so then end up overeating rubbish. Sometimes my binges can get out of hand:-Z

I went to see the GP about it all and he just fobbed me off saying my binge eating is because of depression. Now I accept that my 'IBS' and bingeing can be made worse by depression, but i truly believe that the reason I'm depressed is because I struggle so much with losing weight, IBS, and daring to eat anything in case I end up bloated.!

have booked a consultation to see a hypnotherapist to see if I can build on my low self esteem and to see if i can curb the bingeing. I worry though that because I can't think of any meals that I enjoy that don't make me bloated, that I won't stick to it.

I'm not keen on meat (love fish) but veggies upset my tummy so I'm limited. I had thought i asking for a referral to a dietician as Fire Fox suggested previously but I get scared my GP will be funny with me like he can be sometimes. I had also thought of changing surgeries but my husband seems to think I'll have the same problems wherever i go!

    Sorry for the ramble!xx
  • Aw hun :( You're perfectly entitled to change GP, I've done it before - one insisted I "couldn't have a thyroid issue as I was way too young" despite it running in my family. Change GP, blood test, et voila, hypothyroidism.

I suffer moderate IBS, not crippling, and do find walking really helps it :) Good luck hun.

  • Hi hun,

Okay firstly I am not here to promote my blog but just to tell you how I managed to finally break habit. I started blogging about my daily habits / food / exercise etc. Admittedly I started the challenge for the Help For Heroes Charity because I can never do anything for me but it really seems to have worked. I am on a bit of a slow go / no go at the moment but looks like I have finally managed to break that barrier. My blog is www.lbsforpounds.wordpress.com and it is free to do. I have all kinds of subscribers and followers and even if it means I help one person other than myself and the charity then it will have been worth it.

Slow and steady is the way forward and just keep focusing forward. Don't ever look back on a size you used to be, look forward to the size you will be!

xXx You know where I am if you ever need any help with anything - setting up your blog, picking a charity, thinspiration? xXx
Debt free, smiling and proud - it's been a long @$$ road!
If you're going through it, know that you got this! Believe in the process and you can do anything you put your mind to!
I've got this, I can do this, I believe in me! xXx
