Hello all! I want to buy some dried butter and cannellini beans, and wondered if anyone has found any cheap stockists? Thanks.

Hi houseiseverything,
As you haven't had any replies on the Old Style board I've moved your thread over to the Grocery Shopping board to see if you can get help there.

Asian grocery stores are fantastic as you can get a huge variety and in big bags which last for ages. I'd not entirely dismiss regular supermarkets though - my local MrT has chickpeas, pinto beans and lentils for the same price as the grocery - depends on how good they are at pricechecking in your area though. If you've got a bulk bin place near you, it would be worth checking out.
The beans do swell hugely when soaked - usually double in size - and are really filling as well, so even at supermarket prices they are great value.
One small word of caution is that I'd really advise buying a small bag of a variety you haven't tried before. I like most beans but I'm very happy that I didn't buy the 5kg bag of black eyed beans as I'm not a fan at all and would be stuck finding creative ways to hide them in food lol0 -
You're right, they have a distinctive flavour - but I'm sure you would like them cooked the Indian way and served with rice - try this recipe.GreenFairy wrote: »I like most beans but I'm very happy that I didn't buy the 5kg bag of black eyed beans as I'm not a fan at all and would be stuck finding creative ways to hide them in food lol
OP - butter and cannellini beans aren't really used in Asian cookery so I wouldn't spend money to go out of your way to and Asian store to find them. I was looking for dried haricot beans, but ended up with having to choose btwn a supermarket with a wholefood section and the health food shop. I'll be on the lookout next time I pass a Turkish supermarket though.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!
