Anyone know how to make fake blood?

Sorry, not exactly Yuletide, but this seemed the best place to ask out of all the boards. I want to go to a party as Carrie, and a large amount of fake blood costs a silly amount of money so I was hoping to make it from scratch. I tried last year with golden syrup mixed with water and other stuff, I know Americans use corn syrup but I read golden syrup would be OK, but it was a total fail, it just turned out awful. Does anyone know the best fake blood recipe, there's so many out there I don't know where to start, and most of the youtube tutorials seem to be American!

Yes Golden Syrup can be used as a replacement to corn syrup

I would imagine glycerine and red food colouring might do the trick - probably need paste food colouring though to make the colour anything like red.
Another idea might be to go to the 99pence store and buy some of those edible syrup blood sweet/props and splatter that about generously?0 -
if you are just wanting to put the fake blood on clothing (and not your face/skin) then i would use red food colouring (the cheap liquid type) I have used it before and a little goes a long way!

Last year I made some from red food colouring paste and pva glue, it looked really effective for wounds and on ripped clothing, the glue dries clear so it looks like glossy coagulated blood...discussing but it made the point :-/0

If you want scabby type blood for your face then mix golden syrup, powdered red colouring and some instant coffee and smear it on (this doesn't keep, you can't make it ahead). You can also do this with a small pack of fake blood and will be just as cheap and much less risky.
If you want large liquid quantities for clothing you're better adding a smallish amount of chocolate syrup to ketchup - do this in a bowl so you can see the colour changing and stop adding chocolate when it looks like you're at the right colour. This will be uncomfortable on your clothing until it dries and probably afterwards so you might want to wear a waterproof layer under your dress.
