Half Price Whole Chicken, now £2 per kilo

Mr T's has an offer on for Half Price Chicken - so that makes it £2/- for a whole bird (it says approx 1.4 - 3.5kg). I'm not sure this is correct. On mysupermarket it comes up as £2.50 for a 1.6kg medium chicken. I'm not sure which is which. I'm going to Mr T's tonight so will report back.

Good price Lidl is £2.20 kg.
Don't often cook chicken, so much waste.

Very little waste! Roast on Sunday, stir fry & sandwiches on Monday, carcass can be used to make stock or we just toss it to the farm cats.
    Think economy!!

thanks cherrypie. it was indeed £2 per kilo.

it's not a waste at all. i agree with Tis. I also do the same - roast on sunday, chicken and vegetable pie monday, i make chicken stock with the bones and make risotto (with any leftovers or usually veggie) on wednesday. sometimes when i buy the larger ones as it is only 2 of us we also have leftovers to make enchil-lasagne a rachel ray recipe of using layers of tortilla with shredded chicken (soaked in this super yum cheese sauce).

We only ever buy chicken when its on offer and we do a roast for 3, sandwiches, the carcass along with little bits left go to make a soup.

    3 meals for a £3-£4 chicken.

I've bought a chicken for Sunday - Roast. Monday, pie, Tuesday - risotto and soup with the carcass (that will make at least 6 servings :) )

So that's at least 12 meals from one bird!

I also, when I can buy a whole chicken I am not to fussed whether it had a happy or a sad life, it was bred for eating, and before I get blasted by the 'Oh-the-poor chickens-don't-get-to-run-around-brigade' It is a chicken, not a cat or a dog, but a chicken, and much as I would love to think that farm animals all have a jolly whizzy time in the farm yard I am practical enough to realise that happy or sad as its life has been, its now dead, and will never do anything but feed me as the next person up the food chain.

I was brought up during an era of austerity that makes this one look like a walk in the park.We had no central heating, double glazing, washing machines, microwaves and damn few chickens.,It was a luxury meal that most folk only had at Christmas .My late Dad kept chickens in the back garden, and as children we knew that they were for eating not petting or playing with.
If I can buy a chicken for around £3-4 I can make at least a dozen meals out of it and virtually nowt is wasted apart from the bones The carcuss is used to make stock for soup and from the flesh I will make roast, curry, pie, rissoto and sandwiches. To me that is a darned good economical use of what has been grown for its purpose. So sorry I cannot afford to be fussy and only eat a happy clucker, as at the end of the day I will be the happy well fed person who has used my skills to make the most of what I can afford.
