credit ref - debt is it worth paying off quick?

Hi been lurking on these boards for a while and finally plucked up the courage to post!

Had my LBM recently and just been to see a CAB debt advisor. He told me to write to my creditors and do a SOA and work out how much I can offer them.

My question is as I now have a credit card default on my credit history which will be there for 6 yrs is it worth me breaking my back to get these debts paid off asap? If I sort out my debts before the 6 yrs will i be able to get credit (ie mortgage)?

The CAB advisor said to make sure that i dont leave too much available funds to pay debts on my SOA by adding a bit to my outgoings.

What do you think?
