Exhaust rattles

My exhaust has started rattling and clanking on again. It is much worse when the car is first started and cold. Seems to mostly only do it when stopped too.

I've had a look under the car and nothing is loose. I had the Cat and front pipe replaced less than 6 months ago and the rest of the exhaust was replaced only 2 years ago. Everything still looks pretty new and decent still.

Any ideas?

This car is becoming a major money pit. :(

Heat shield? Is noise definitely coming from underneath the car?

Sounds like it is coming from the rear underneath.

Definitely something to do with the exhaust due to experience with what I wrote in the OP.

Worse when stated from cold, Is it ticking over properly when cold?

Start it with the bonnet open and watch the engine, Maybe a faulty engine mount.

Back box is usually the first bit to go as it doesn't get hot and water etc sits inside and rots the baffles. Try banging the box with your fist - if the insides have rotted, you'll hear it rattle inside.

I'd have said baffles, too - OP do you drive mainly short journeys?
  • Most journeys are 5 miles to work and back.

    Oh Dear... Besides the exhaust.

5 miles not good for an engine, It wont get properly warmed through and burn off the contaminants.

I do hope you change the oil often, Every 6 months.

It's just a runabout and to get me to work.
  • Update:

Turns out it was a loose clamp. Garage tightened it for free, MSE style!
