Can someone please help me.:( Tax code

Options
Hi

Any help would be grateful.

ok im not sure what ive done

I was on the wrong Tax code an paying to much tax so I phoned HMRC my tax code went higher then I was already on, I received the new tax code but my employer hadn't received the code (or refunded me) so I phoned again and this time I was given a different code a much lower then I was on before?

Does this mean I will be paying more tax then I was paying before ?

As when I first time spoke to the Tax office guy he told me I have been paying to much tax ,which will be refunded from my employer is that correct?

can someone pls help me with this as I dont know what to do. An If I'm meant to claim the over paid tax from my employer or HMRC?

Thank you

In order to help, we will need the ACTUAL code details you are on now and your pay & tax details so we can check what you SHOULD be on.

Post these and we should be able to help.

Also, have you had a previous job before this one ?

If you have , did you hand in a P45 or P46 to your new employer ?

Have you claimed JSA this tax year ?

The more info you provide, the more help we can provide !

As antonic says, if you provide details you'll get better advice.

However, if you are on PAYE then in general there is no need to reclaim overpaid tax as it will be automatically returned to you once the correct tax code is in place - as long as the overpayment is within the current tax year. Any overpayment made in earlier tax years will need to be reclaimed from HMRC.

The basic allowance for the current tax year is £8105, which translates to a single tax code of 810L. In your case it looks as if HMRC had originally split your allowance over the two jobs, 492 + 318 = 810. They then changed that to allocate the whole allowance (810L) to one job, presumably the 22 hour one, leaving nothing for the second job, so recieving a code of BR (= Basic Rate i.e. all income from this job is taxable). Both of these situations result in you paying the same amount of tax, assuming the pay in each job was more than the allowance. Difficult to know what the next tax code is for util you get it, but if HMRC are changing one they'll also have to change the other one.

OK what has happened is for some reason HMRC have decided to allocate the WHOLE of your tax code (810L) against job 1 and then apply Basic rate (20% tax) against job 2.

You need to ask them to either :

    1) Revert you back to the situation you were in previously OR
    2) Ask for the 810L code to be applied to job 2 (as this is the one you earn the mmost money from.

They *should* be able to do this for you.

If you had worked between 6/04/12 and the date you started your new job AND didnt hand in a P45/P46 then your HMRC wouldnt know you had started a new job and couldnt instruct your employer which code to use.

    Hope this helps.

They are correct in as much as your allowance is now split with one job receiving £2160 and the other job receiving £5945 of tax free allowances. This will give a total of £8105 split over the two jobs.

Can't say if they are correct for your situation as you don't actuall say how much you earn in each job.

To work out your tax position you need to give the following information for each job from the last payslip you had for each job.

    Gross pay to date
    Tax paid to date
    Tax code
Tax basis (This usually follows the code on your payslip, may be a number or letter eg 0,1,X or something like non-cumulative or cumulative)
The week number or date paid.
