London/derry makes top 10 city list

Seriously?!?
Londonderry has been named as one of the world's best cities to visit in 2013.

Guidebook company Lonely Planet placed the Northern Ireland city as high as fourth in a top 10 cities list in its Best In Travel 2013 publication, saying:: "Londonderry is the UK City of Culture 2013, which means this vibrant historic walled city is undergoing a renaissance."

Lonely Planet's Tom Hall added: "Best in Travel is all about identifying destinations which offer the traveller something special. Derry is a brilliant example of a city that has bounced back from difficult times. This is a city with heart, which shines through in its exciting arts and music scene."

    Seriously?!?

    Have you ever been ?

A beautiful vibrant city, I walk it a few nights a week, strangers nod and say hello and smile.

Granted every big City has it's Chavs (or Muckers as we call them here) but do not talk down a place before you give it a chance.

2013 should be something special here.
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:
  • I worked there for years actually!! I'm just surprised it topped the 'worlds' best cities!!

Oh stop....... it's not a bad place, I have to admit!
  • lol :) It's def not the worst!
Unfortunately it lands in the news for all the wrong reasons :(

I know, the woman there do like to really slap on the makeup!! :rotfl:
  • :rotfl: Wasn't actually what I was referring to but valid point!!

Halloween next week too. London/derry is the place to celebrate.

(Needless to say I'm staying clear. I drove down the Strand Road once early-ish evening one Halloween and swore never again!)

    EDIT:
And I'm well aware your makeup comment does not refer only to Halloween ;)

Reports last week placed a young woman in the center of the City wearing jeans and a hoodie… she was quickly set upon by a large crowd who striped, spray tanned her, highlighted her hair, dressed her to the nines and stillettoed her feet, order was quickly restored :rotfl:

YES, all preconceptions of slap wearing are 100% correct :)

  • Some really do epitomise the term "slapping it on with a trowel"!
Is it something they teach the young girls in the schools down there?

Either that or they are all somehow David Dickinson fans

It has plenty going for it nowadays - but seriously - making the top 10 just might be pushing it a bit.
