Hi all
On wednesday my computer died on me.
I took it to a recomended pc repair shop and was told it was the motherboard ? £80 to install a new one.
Any way left there close to tears i still owe £700 on it and it's only 18 months old.
Got my friend to take it to another pc repair shop yesterday to see what they said.
He opened it up said it was dirty and just needed a service clean £15 it's working now
What he said had caused the problem was that the pc is a powerfull one and that it had been put in a cheap case that was not big enougth It will cost me the money for the case and £20 for him to do it he also said to get another 256mb has what ive got is not enougth.
Do all you PC experts think this sounds right and that i should get it done

None of the readers on this thread have all the facts that pertain to your case. Cool computer components tend to last longer. Extra intake and exhaust fans suitably placed can make all the difference. There are temperature monitoring programs that can help diagnose overheating.
The proof of any modification is in the subsequent testing.

It is a bit of a stab in the dark without all the facts, but the second shops pricing sounds reasonable (£20 labour to install everything in a new case).
The fact that it is now working without you paying £80 for a new motherboard should give you some confidence too!
Out of interest, if it is having these problems at less than 18 months old, where did it come from originally?0 -
Brought it from kays cataloge.
Not the best place to buy one from i know but the only way i could afford one at the timeNumber 4 due 21st jan0 -
if this is the first time you have had problems,
i have heard recommendations about opening the case and giving a gentle hoover........
the amount of dust that gathers is unbelievable......
and dust and heat dont mix with electronic circuitrysmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to....

A poorly designed case will cause other components to malfunction. I regularly deal with PCs that have two exaust fans on the rear. One through the power supply and a seperate one near the processor. The result is that they suck air and dust in through the floppy disk and the CDROM.
All my home PCs have Lian Li cases. They are a tad boxy but well thought out. They suck air in through a filter driven by twin fans with variable speed.
