Chased for debt already paid - NEWBIE QUESTION

Hi, I'm new to the site, so this may have been asked before - sorry! I got a letter asking me to pay a debt, I asked the company to let me know who the debt was with and it turns out I have already paid this debt to this company - under a different reference number. (last payment 1.1.07). I have been in contact with the company, told them that I've paid it, and am now waiting for a reply - by email. This debt is 11 years old, and I paid it, but am I right in thinking I needn't have done? I had a hard time 10-11 years ago and just thought these debts were catching up with me, and it was best to pay them. But need I do so? I won't be paying the aforementioned debt twice, thats for sure, but am a bit worried that other debt collection agencies will start trying to get money from me for debts I had around that time. I have managed to get a current account with an overdraft, and have got credit with other companies in the last four years, so am a bit confused. Any advice much appreciated.

You are not legally obliged to repay debts incurred over 6 years ago where you have had no contact from the company during that time.
