Cycling to work tactics
Comments
-
Been many years since I cycled to work (or cycled anywhere!) and it wasn't that far when I did, but my tactic at the time was to try to leave early enough so that you can do the last part of the journey slowly. Gives you time to cool down and get your breath back.Ewarwoowar2 wrote: »It would be interesting to hear fellow cyclists tactics forgetting to work clean and presentable.0 -
I do 6 miles each way all year in all weathers:Ewarwoowar2 wrote: »It would be interesting to hear fellow cyclists tactics forgetting to work clean and presentable.
1. Aluminium mud guards
Not plastic ones and fastened securely with no rattles.
2. Exustar Stelvio Shoes
Leather SPD cycling shoes which can be wiped with a rag at work and look like office shoes.
3. Panniers
Much more comfortable than a rucksack and a lot, lot less sweaty on your back.
4. Tyres with minimum tread
Use road tyres or the thinnest smoothest tyres you can get away with as they will throw up less dirt and water.
5. Breathable jacket with waterproof over trousers with waterproof over shoes when it rains.
6. Breezblocker handlebar windbrakes0 -
I cycle 10 miles each way to/from work along one of the Cycle Superhighways in London. I really enjoy it, it's quicker than getting the train, it's cheaper and the exercise is great.
I have just bought some mudguards which I am going to attach at the weekend. As we enter Winter they are pretty much a necessity if you don't want to end up soaked at the office.
I also bought some lights recently which are obviously important for health and safety reasons. I have a bright yellow football jacket that I wear too which helps with visibility.0 -

Something like this is the most effective:

Tow paths, cyclists, and fishermen don't mix well around here.0

I got an email from the Canal & River Trust the other day to inform me that their annual towpath trimming work has begun. This means that towpaths are more likely to be covered in bits of twig and thorns, which may cause punctures. (I find I pick up far more punctures on the road from bits of glass than thorns on the towpath, but I thought I'd pass it on

I'm getting about a puncture every one or two weeks. Usually the rear tire on the road. It seems like a lot, but I'm not sure. What do you all think?I am an employment solicitor. However, my views should not be taken to be legal advice. It's difficult to give correct opinion based on the information given by posters.0 -

I used to take my son on the back of my bike to the nursery next door to work. He went in Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I also needed to take in lunch, my gym kit and works clothes.
So I:
Monday - fill up big bag with clean suit and shirts for the week, as well as 4 sets of t-shirts/shorts/socks for the gym. And my lunch. Put the bag in the baby seat and the rest of it in a rucksack.
Tues->Thurs: Take my son in on the back of the bike, with just my lunch in a rucksack. Leave my dirty washing/gym kit festering at work!
Friday: Travel in light. Bring all my dirty washing home and present it to the wife!
I kept my shoes at work, and cycled in using the same shoes I go to the gym in.
Bank holidays would really screw this routine up!0
